My Favorite book for teaching Roman Numerals

This book makes Roman Numerals easy to understand. You can learn the system in a few easy lessons. It gives a hands on way to learn for those who like to touch and move things when they learn.

I checked it out from the library for my first born. Found it again for my second born and now have decided to buy it.

My 9 yr old son can't get enough numbers (and I can't get far enough away from them--shhh, don't tell him).

But this book's fun and simple art and explanation make it a manual even a math loathing mother could love.

By the way, the other edition on "Look Inside" is nothing like this one--frankly I prefer this one to the old.

And who can resist the horse drawn chariot on the cover?

Oddly Useful

This useful, albeit odd, frustrating, and confusing reference work for the ostensible purposes of finding "associated" words can be more disappointing than useful. Example (1): I was looking for the word "Eucharist" -- as if one could forget such a word -- but it does not exist in this "dictionary," not under "Holy Communion" not under "Mass not under "Eucharist." Perhaps a hundred years ago, this word might not roll off the tip of a reverse dictionary, but for more than sixty years it has been the preferred appellation for all these "other" associated words. Example (2): I was looking for the name of a particular "pathology," but no entry for the word "pathology" exists. I pondered a while, and then my own reverse brain suggested "disease," a viola, "disease" has a host of pathologies. But even "disease" does not suggest . . . .

Two "features" of this reverse dictionary are baffling. The "associated" words are in bold, but the associated word's definition PRECEDES the word. Okay, this is a reversed world. Worse, perhaps, is how the "associations" are determined. Alphabetically would have been my obvious choice, since words are words, however associated. Not here, readers. The "associations" are by the editors' "degree of proximity." Proximity to what, you ask? Proximity to THEIR degree of association of words without any one else's reasons. Besides being entirely "arbitrary" (if not a bit egocentric), how can such "proximities" be determined, and assuming some standard could be found, how could anyone communicate those standards to those who are already in a search for what they cannot speak, mention, or find?

Alas, I almost threw this book in the fireplace. If any of us thought "plot" might be associated with "story," we'd be wrong. If we thought "plot" might be associated with "narrative," we'd again be wrong. So what do these editors associate "plot" with? I'm serious: "machination, Machiavellian, wheel-and-deal, synopsis." At least the "Ms" are together, even if nothing else is. The irony, here, is that the first-three "tangents" make more sense than "synopsis." How does synopsis relate to plot, and why aren't story and narrative a part of the plot? Because the "plot" is reversed against the user too stupid to find the association in the first place, if you don't object to reading explication before what's being explicated, that is.

Still, all these odd features notwithstanding, this book is sometimes useful, despite itself. But between you, me, and OUP, I suggest Random House's "Word Menu." Not quite the same, but certainly far more useful.

Good on Your Reference Shelf

If you like to search for the exactly right word, if you don't believe there's such things as synonyms, if you just love the language and enjoy browsing to learn things you don't know, then you'll enjoy this.

Five stars because I'm a sucker for the sorites paradox: it doesn't top the list of must-have language references, but it's still a darn good addition to a competent reference shelf.

If you're looking for a first word reference beyond a dictionary and a thesaurus, get the Random House Webster's Word Menu (Random House Newer Words Faster).

This was a tale told in two parts, a second chance love story which began one summer at college when two people from very different backgrounds came together for a summer of fun. What they weren't expecting was to fall in love so quickly. Miscommunication and circumstance lead to an epic break up that keeps them apart for 12 long years.

Adam is a possessive and alpha type man who is confident in his beliefs, but once he learns that he was deceived by his own father, he has to work hard to try and win back the woman he so harshly turned away.

Nikole has moved on and made a good life for herself, with a father and a brother she never knew she had and a job she only ever dreamed of, but she never forgot the man who stole her heart and cruelly broke it all those years ago.

Adam wants her back, but she is reluctant to trust him again.

This was an angsty story, often frustrating at times due to the lack of communication between their younger selves, but once I moved onto the second part of the book I found that they had matured enough to be able to actually sort through their problems like adults.

I really loved Kole's brother Jet, and would be very interested to see a book about him.

This was a great debut from author Riann C. Miller, and I am very much looking forward to what she has in store for us in future works.

This is a standalone, told in dual POV.

Kole’s life hasn’t been a walk in the park, but she has been determined to rising above and making something of her life. Kole is a fantastic character. I am huge fan of people/characters who don’t make excuses for their past, but find ways to rise above. When we meet Kole she is in college and working at a coffee shop. That’s where she meets Adam.

Adam not so admirable. Yeah, he is your typical wealthy college student. He isn’t overly friendly or nice, he is just a self-centered guy looking out for himself. When he meets Kole in the coffee shop where she is working he never plans for it to go further than one night, but Kole isn’t that kind of girl.

This book is transformational.

I am a psychotherapist intern and had been looking for books on Ecotherapy, as I am wanting to move in that direction with my psychotherapeutic work. In the course of educating myself on Ecotherapy, references to "Shinrin-Yoku" came up a lot. “Shinrin-Yoku” translates to “Forest Bathing” in Japanese. It is a practice of mindful nature immersion.

I was intrigued and looked on Amazon.com to see if there were any books specifically on Shinrin-Yoku. Amos Clifford’s book was the only book in English on Shinrin-Yoku. Dubiously, I downloaded a sample. It seemed likely that it was self-published (and therefore not vetted by professional publishers and editors) and, consequently, I didn’t have high hopes for it. But it was the only thing I could get my hands on about Shinrin-Yoku and I was very curious about Shinrin-Yoku. I needn’t have worried. I was in love with the book by the time I got to the end of the acknowledgements.

I read it all in one sitting. It was clear, concise, and informational. It gave information on the scientific research available about Shinrin-Yoku, but was also explicit about what has not yet been studied; it appealed to my intellect by providing scientific data without making over-blown, unsupportable claims. It seemed to have an open facing towards spirituality; it neither promoted any particular spiritual view, nor did it seem to disclose the possibility of people having spiritual experiences in nature. It seemed to take the view that the natural world is wondrous enough, without heaping any particular mythology on top of it. Given that I fall somewhere between atheism and Buddhism, that approach really appealed to me. In many ways, it seemed foremost a primer on mindfulness in nature. Because for me, the intersection of mindfulness and nature, has already had such a profound impact on my personal growth and well-being, I felt I had a home in this practice of Shinrin-Yoku as it was described to me in this little book.
I was also so grateful that the one book on Shinrin-Yoku in the Amazon store was a guidebook for people who want to lead Shinrin-Yoku experiences. I was not sure at the time whether or not I wanted to lead Shinrin-Yoku experiences, but I did know that I wanted to lead people on mindful nature experiences in support of their well-being and self-growth. This book really helped me begin to imagine ways that I might do that. So many books that claim to teach a process really just are expensive brochures for a more expensive and extensive training or coaching process. It’s not that I would say that the Shinrin-Yoku book is a replacement for more extensive training in the Shinrin-Yoku process. If you want to lead Shinrin-Yoku walks, there is a certification process for that. But the book isn’t holding anything back. It is really teaching what it claims to teach. The tools are immediately accessible. On my first trip to the forest after reading the book, my experience of nature was profoundly transformed. Given that at the time I wasn’t thinking of leading Shinrin-Yoku experiences, I also felt like the information about practical considerations of how to lead people in guided nature experiences was very educational and gave me some framework for how I might adapt that to a psychotherapeutic context.

It was the aforementioned first trip to the forest after reading the book, though, that really magicked me. After having taken in some of the lessons from the book, I could really feel the difference in my way of engaging with the world around me. I spent two hours walking two miles, falling in love with trees and insects and rocks and mushrooms and sunbeams and the sound of water and of wind whispering through the trees. I noticed things I had never noticed before. Silk worms hanging by their tenuous threads. Complex and intricate flight patterns of dragonflies. A snake with a bright yellow stripe down its side. Sounds the trees made (some like creaky doors) when they swayed together in the breeze. The way that all of these California Bay Laurel trees were really all one Calfornia Bay Laurel tree. A tree that had fallen across the path and been sawed off down to a stump regrowing itself, sending out new shoots, refusing to die. I could feel how when I slowed down and opened up, that the wonder of the natural world filled me to overflowing. I touched bark and leaf and fungus and running water and dry earth and spongy moss. I marveled. I expressed my wonder at the beauty. I apologized to the cut down trees on behalf of the human beings that had to do that sort of thing. I was open, open, open.

As I was leaving the forest, I noticed how I was even more open to the other human animals along my path. I was open to the college students loudly laughing as they hiked the path. I was open to the man with the over-enthusiastic dog. I was open to the homeless person at the street corner. I gave him a dollar or maybe a five. I was glad to. I felt happy, grounded, content, amazed by the wonder of the world and my place in it.

No mind-altering substances. Just Shinrin-Yoku. Check it out.

Graceful and well written guide to "forest bathing"

This graceful, short book is a wonderful guide to Shinrin-Yoku, or "forest bathing." The author writes simply and clearly, providing effective guidance for those who wish to experience and/or lead nature walks using these natural attunement methods. He describes both the need for greater connection with nature, and the healing benefits of so doing. It is an excellent resource for anyone interested in ecotherapy and/or environmental education. The author, however, clearly distinguishes content-based walks focused on teaching participants "about" the natural world from Shinrin-Yoku's focus on encouraging participants to sense and deepen their personal and felt connection with the vibrant flow of the natural world.

great version, except for the uniforms

I'm not a Boyscout, but I picked this up at the library and liked it so much I had to get my own copy. Courious about the different versions of this handbook I did some research. This version (1990, 10th edition) shows the scouts in their "alternate"/expensive uniforms as opposed to the traditional ones.

Some items this edition includes, but NOT in at least one of the later ones, are:
-Making a fire without matches
-Rowing, canoeing, sailing, etc
-International Morse code
-Semaphore signaling
-Scout silent signals
-Stars
-Weather
-Edible wild plants
-Wildlife/plant habitats
-Trees
-Poisonous snakes
-Merit badge requirements

This edition does NOT have the below topics, which are included in at least one of the more recent (later or earlier) versions:
-Sea Scouting/Sea Exploring
-Indian signs
-Puberty (this is the only edition without this topic)

Like finding an old friend

I used this book when I was in the scouts. Being young I failed to see the book for what it is and abused mine and lost it over time. I found this one and it was like getting and old friend back. Very happy with the book and its in near perfect condition.
