A book ALL fiction writers should read today

I read this in two sittings. It's not a long book - it's direct, to the point, and gives a solid series of good advice for the working writer.
I've been guilty of it myself: I came up with an awesome idea for a story. I loved the idea, and just knew it would resonate with people. I wrote the book. And - it's a good book. People who've read it love it.
But not a lot of people read it. The reason why is that I wrote the book for myself as the audience, without stopping to consider what the readers OUT THERE in the world were actually looking for.
Some writers do that and happen to land a hit. I've had books get lucky that way too. But wouldn't it be better if you instead analyzed what readers were looking for before you started working on the story?
Good stand up comics tailor their routines to their audiences. The people producing blockbuster films (that succeed) usually plan their film, carefully tailoring it to hit the audience in just the right ways. We prose writers can do the same thing.
Chris's book isn't some sort of half-baked shortcut to fame and fortune. You'll still need great writing skills. You'll still need to work hard (in fact, he's tossing MORE work on the pile with his excellent exercises - thanks, Chris!). But this book shows us how to work smarter, and write more effectively through learning what our readers are looking for and targeting those interests and desires that are most likely to resonate.
I sincerely don't think any novelist or other fiction writer today can afford to pass on this book.

I didn't find the discussion of breaking down subcategories all that useful as even the subcategories are fairly broad and loose

This book is a quick read - it took me maybe an hour. I appreciated that information was presented concisely and that there were assignments to help you figure out how to put the info into action. However, most of the advice contained within can be summed up as follows: check out what books are selling well and write books that are similar. I didn't find the discussion of breaking down subcategories all that useful as even the subcategories are fairly broad and loose thus limiting their usefulness in describing what they contain with any significant precision. Personally I would see it being more useful to look at the broader categories and then seeing what the trends are. Still, the ebook is inexpensive and if I didn't buy it I would have been curious as to what I was missing so no real hard feelings. The author seems like a nice guy from watching his videos.

80% Great Advice

Chris Fox isn't fancy. I like that he is open and honest about his advice and invites people to disagree with him. In this book and others he encourages bold strategies, with a big picture approach to writing and marketing. Some of it is controversial, and I personally don't agree with all of it, but it's a really good perspective and a strategy that is working for him. This book offers some great insights, especially in analyzing Amazon categories. It is a timely read for modern indie writers and provides solid, workable exercises and examples.
Chris is not a stickler for quality. In the section about editing, he mentions that he is moving to a model of only proofreading, and doing most of the editing himself. That does show in the results since the paragraph he explains this in has a missing word in it. That's the sort of thing that Chris is not worried about however. And his basic strategy is correct. He's concentrating on 80% items that matter to him and it's why I think readers like me are going to be 80% happy with the results.
