A family favorite

I remembered seeing this slim red book in my mother's Czech-American kitchen and just had to get a copy for myself - after all, it's the source of our favorite childhood treat, Czechoslovakian Sugar Cookies (p.55)! Rich and buttery with a slick coating of confectioners sugar, these cookies aren't like anything else - and you won't find the recipe anywhere else, either!
In addition to containing recipes for such classic dishes as Czech Sauerkraut, Liver Dumpling Soup, Bohemian Rye Bread, Kolache and all manner of poppy-seed desserts, the book also includes short sections on Czech history and traditions. Published in 1981, much of the historical information is now vastly out-of-date, but it still provides an interesting look at Czech and Slovak culture - particularly from the perspective of Czech immigrants to the United States (complier Pat Martin is credited as the 'coordinator of the Czech village Association of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, so there's a definite mid-Western emphasis).
The book contains a few color photos and several black and white pictures and illustrations.
