Death and Exile: The Ethnic Cleansing of Ottoman Muslims, 1821-1922, by Justin McCarthy

Death and Exile is the dramatic history of the deportation and death of millions of Muslims in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries from areas that have remained centers of conflict--the Balkans, the Middle East, and what was the Soviet Union--and shows how these conflicts developed. The history of the expansion of the Russian Empire and the creation of new nations in the Balkans have traditionally been told from the standpoint of the Christian nations that were carved from the Ottoman Empire. Death and Exile tells the story from the standpoint of the Turks and other Muslims who suffered death and exile as a result of imperialism, nationalism, and ethnic conflict. The compelling story that unfolds in Death and Exile deepens our perspective on the history of the peoples of the Middle East and the Balkans and presents a framework for understanding modern developments in the region.

Review
The book is well documented, not only by Turkish archival materials but also by Western European diplomatic reports and eyewitness accounts. --Choice Magazine

This masterful analysis details sustained Christian prejudice and brutality to Muslims and revises dramatically the historiography of the late Ottoman Empire, the Balkans, southern Russia, and modern Turkey. It is a major historical achievement. --Middle East Journal

This is the first well-documented and comprehensive Western account of the treatment of Ottoman Muslims from the 1820s to 1919-1922. The scope of the book, its vast documentation, and the author's efforts to remain objective and impartial in analyzing little known events that most other Western scholars have ignored are praiseworthy. . . . McCarthy's book is a major scholarly achievement in a little-explored area and an act of intellectual courage and honesty. --International Migration Review

TIME TO READ HOW TURKISH MASSES THE WORLD HAS ACCUSED WERE THEMSELVES CLEANSED AS DOCUMENTED BY AN IMPARTIAL HISTORY PROFESSOR!
By Mehmet Sahinoglu
A fabulous documentary book telling the world in detail about the other-side’s reality through an authentic perspective of Turks (Turkish Muslims in general) being cleansed and decimated ruthlessly in heaps of 10s of thousands especially in Russia, Bulgaria, Greece, (at one incident, the hoops of the horses never stepped on anything but Turkish-Muslim flesh for a mile long, as it was documented in Mora peninsula), Bosnia and elsewhere. The Ottoman Empire in 1915, three years before its demise, was staging a life–and–death self–defense of its last glimpses of bare existence with 25% to 30% of its male active population (total population: 14 million) killed at some 7 fronts in the world, one of which was Gallipoli and others were Mesopotamia, Galicia, Libya and Egypt, Hejaz and Yemen, Caucasia, Balkans. Justin McCarthy’s Death and Exile: Ethnic Cleansing of Ottoman Muslims, 1821-1922 is a must–read with its Table 30 documenting 5m Turkish Muslims wiped out exceeding the Holocaust figures (4m). The history professors of the West are mute on these facts except for a few select such as Dr. McCarthy. The entire civilized (!) world including the politicized Mr. Pope, the revengeful, in Vatican are blaming Turkey for the falsehood-laden genocide tall-tales when those poor folks only had to out-of self-defense protect their sanity. This is an eye-opening book along with "The Turk in America”, which is Prof. Justin McCarthy's other facts-based-historical manuscript. These two books are MUST read by all Turks and especially non-Turkic history enthusiasts elsewhere before they jump the gun and make accusations about a whole nation so as to learn about the documented history rather than au verbatim imitating incorrectly the inflated fabrications of lies and more lies. Congratulations to Professor Justin McCarthy for his courageous, fearless and scientific approach in his stellar accomplishment. The world needs more authors like him. Remember that some of the earlier U.S. historian late authors, such as the late Stanford J Shaw for his History of the Ottoman Empire and Modern Turkey were sadly threatened for their lives if they did not stop writing about the documented counter- truth. Maybe this is a fresh beginning for new-breed historians to voice their documented historical theses by not fearing what the fabricated lies-addicted folks falsely claimed all these many decades since a new Republic of Turkey was founded by one and only ATATURK in 1923.

A very important work - fills a big gap in academia
By Hasan-Can Arat
Wonderful book. It should be noted, first and foremost, that this in an academic work. It does not necessarily make for leisurely reading at the beach or in bed. It is very useful for research, but I would avoid it unless you are a serious history buff.

For what it is, it is a great book, pretty comprehensive and objective. It is not a book about the end of the Ottoman Empire or World War I. It is a book about the ethnic cleansing of Ottoman Muslims, therefore it only focuses on that aspect of the era, but it does not minimize the similar experiences of other ethnic groups during that time.

The book is arranged by different ethnic cleansing campaigns, making it easy to follow and easy to refer to in the future. Each campaign had a different context and he illustrates that quite efficiently. He relies on facts rather than speculation or interpretation. He avoids raising philosophical or historical questions, which some might find objectionable, but again, that is not the purpose of the book. Since it is one of the first English-language publications of its kind, he has to start at a very basic level: "this happened." Very little research has been done on the topic due to politics and lack of funding, and as a result, he is stuck with laying a foundation upon which other scholars can build. However, it is a solid foundation, and one walks away with a much more thorough understanding of this controversial period.

I should also mention that Justin McCarthy is often accused of "genocide denial." At no point in this book does he deny anything. In fact, he directly address the massacres of Armenians. He does not use the g-word, but does not argue against its validity either. He is, in fact, quite neutral when it comes to the Armenian side of the equation, but for those who fail to see that there is, in fact, another side to the equation, this book is criminal. However, if it were up to his critics, this book would not have been written at all.

A New Look Challenging Deeply Ingrained Prejudices
By Ergun Kirlikovali
This is one of the most important books written on this subject. It uses mostly primary sources, bringing a totally new, demographic insight to the involuntary population movements of 19th and 20th centuries.

Prof. Justin McCarthy's formidable research unearths an heretofore unknown, unspoken, and mostly ignored facts, painting an dramatic picture based on demographic methods, findings, and conclusions. Such an approach has never been attempeted before, leaving one wondering if Western blindness and deafness towards Muslim and Turkish suffering was deliberate.

Extensively documented facts like Armenian revolts (1882-1920), Armenian terrorism (1882-1920 and then again 1973 to present), Armenian treason (1914-1921), Armenian demands of territories, Armenian hate crimes and war atrocities victimizing Muslims, mostly Turks, and many other aspects of Turkish-Armenian conflict are usually ignored or dismissed in Western treatments, arguably for political correctness purposes and/or perceived material benefits. Stripped of half of its facts, the T-A conflicy is made to look like a genocide, a manipulation which is not very difficult to do. This book, therefore, is a refreshing change from the usual accounts of official narratives promoting an alleged Armenian genocide, completely ignoring the six T's of the Turkish Armenian conflict, mostly promoted by Armenian falsifiers and Turk-haters alik, saturating the West, drowning responsible and scholarly dissent.

That said, I must confess that I have a personal reason to be impressed, if not also devastated, by this book. At the bottom of page 140, the village of KIRLIKOVA, my namesake, was listed as one of those teritories plundered and destroyed by Balkan Christians (mostly Bulgarians and Greeks who first fought the Ottoman Muslims, killing or expelling many Turkish families, then turned on each other.)

Thanks to the efforts of British ambassador in Sofia who reported the massacre of Turks to London and Prof. Justin McCarthy who unearthed this report in a sea of documents during his painstaking research in London, I now have a reliable, scholarly source to piece my family history together with what little I already knew:

In the year 1912, the last scheduled train from the Ottoman city of Selanik (now Thessaloniki in Greece) was about to start its last scheduled run, a tired and anxious journey, to the seat of Ottoman imperial power, istanbul. Among its precious cargo of many war-orphaned Turkish children, was a special baby boy, my father. Pinned on the tiny clothes of this baby boy was a piece of crumpled, old piece of paper that read:

"Akif's son Ratip. Born 1911. KIRLIKOVA. "

He, like many other orphans, was brought to Dar-ul-Eytam in Bebek, istabul ("yetimler evi" in modern Turkish or orphanage in English.) He grew up there without a father, a mother, or sieblings, or any acquaintances. He became a successful forest engineer, criss-crossing Turkish forests and mountains for the rest of his life, until his death in 1973. He married my mother, Bursa-born Munire, daughter of Turkish survivors of similar massacres in Uskup, Macedonia. These two lonely people started a family in 1939 and had eight children. I am the youngest of the six sons and I have an older and a younger sister.

This forlorn but dignified story of an untold tragedy strangely found its lost voice in the cold and uncaring numbers and place names populating the many informative tables in Prof. Justin McCarthy's scholarly book. I didn't really know whether I should laugh or cry, celebrate or commemorate, this shocking personal discovery.

Such is the power of history, that is, if it is based on documented truth, not unsubstantiated claims.

Thank you, Prof Justin McCarthy, for a job well done!
