In 2008 Jumper was brought to the screen as a big-budget SF adventure of the same name, directed by Doug Liman and starring Hayden Christiansen and Samuel L. Jackson. The movie rearranged the story line and gave the protagonist a teleporting sidekick. When the movie's producers expressed a desire to see a novel published about the sidekick's backstory, Gould chose to write the book himself; it was published as Jumper: Griffin's Story (2007), and is not canonical with the other two "Jumper" novels. "Shade" takes place in the world of the novels, not the alternate continuity of the movie.

For fans of the Jumper books, this is a little side note that continues with the characters from those books (not the jumper movie characters) I enjoyed it, and liked the main character. But was a little dissappointed in finding that the short story i purchased was available for free at [...] website.

Good companion to Jumper, Reflex- prequel to Impulse

I like Shade as a short companion to the Jumper, Reflex and Impulse books, too bad you can't get it in print form! Written in 2008 (around the time of the Jumper movie and Griffin's Story book) it's set an undetermined amount of time before Impulse, no hint about Cent having been born yet.
Davy and Millie bring food and water (LOTS of water) to a drought stricken African refugee camp and defend it from a rebel attack with their "jump" abilities.
They befriend a refugee boy Xareed (he's mentioned by name in Impulse) and Millie offers to take his family, not the whole camp, to live in the U.S. The story ends without this happening, making me wonder if Mr Gould once intended to write a related book but just never did. digitalnoir is the author's website- he has this story there and mentions the next Jumper book- Exo- but doesn't give much info on further developments.

A side-jump between Reflex and Impulse.

Xareed is a young man living in a refugee camp with his sisters, mother, and grandfather. The wells have dried up and the only way to get water is by truck. However, after the latest truck is damaged by a rebel mine, Xareed soon discovers that the two aid workers in the camp have a secret that is going to change the camp.
Set between Reflex and Impulse, Shade is a short story told in third-person, following Xareed's perspective. Most people will probably look down on the story for having Davy and Millie as supporting characters, but I don't mind. The novels are their stories. Shade is Xareed's and is an offering of an outside perspective from theirs.
Overall, an average story. It doesn't add much to the Jumper 'verse, but sometimes you need a break from such stories. Fans of Gould's Jumper series are probably going to get more out of the story than someone who just stumbled upon it.
