The History Behind the Hauntings

Ever wonder why - at the location of an infamous slave market in Richmond, Virginia - all the reported ghosts seem to be Caucasian? Or why the Myrtles Plantation is haunted by the ghost of a slave girl and two children that historical record seems to suggest never existed? If so, you will enjoy this book, which is mostly a very entertaining history of some of the most (allegedly) haunted locations in the United States.

Like a good campfire story, ghost stories grow with the telling, whether the story is about a Spanish moss draped plantation in the deep South, or a house in California where the construction doesn't cease until the owner's death. Over the years, titillating snippets are added to make the story just a touch scarier until - like a salacious rumor - the heavily modified tale has grown into accepted fact. But as these additions are carefully peeled back by the author, a story emerges that is quite different from the one portrayed on one or more of the innumerable ghost shows seen on television.

But the author doesn't present his findings with a resound "Got you!" as many professional skeptics do. There are no swamp gases, rabbit holes, or issues involving witness credibility in this book. No, it's presented simply as "Here's the story, and here is the history behind it." Not insulting. Not patronizing. Just information presented in a very entertaining way. In fact, the book doesn't take the position that there are no legitimate hauntings, but rather, there simply may be more to the story that you realize.

Not only did I read the book, but I also listened to the audible version. Both are highly recommended.

A must read for fans of American ghost stories

The thesis for every essay in this book is essentially the same: what does this ghost story tell us about American culture? From the era of slavery to 19th century spiritualism to women's suffrage up to today, ghost stories have played an integral part of our nation's history. As someone who's been intrigued by ghost stories since I was young, I found Dickey's analysis of each ghost story to have an in-depth analysis, providing broader context to often simple legends.

Many of the reviewers here on Amazon focus on whether they enjoyed Dickey's "skeptical" take overall. I don't really understand this attitude, and I'm speaking as someone who neither believes nor disbelieves in ghosts in general. To be honest I've made up some of my own, so I can tell you firsthand that ghost stories can be fictional. Most of the essays in Ghostland don't focus on the truth of the alleged haunting unless it's relevant.

For example, the Winchester Mystery House that Dickey (and I) grew up near is a classic example of a ghost story which blends fact with fiction. Dickey's analysis of the Winchester ghost story does tackle some of these falsehoods head on, but it's in service to answer a broader question: what is it about this strange mansion that drives us to believe it must be haunted? There's no way to talk about this directly without acknowledging how the life of Sarah Winchester was embellished after her death.

In conclusion I would argue that this book is exactly what it says it is: essays about famous American ghost stories and what those stories tell us about ourselves and our history. The "skeptical" take only applies to a small number of the essays where it's needed to fully understand the broader picture. Sometimes when we look in the mirror we don't like what we see, but that says far more about ourselves than it does about the world around us.

Ghostland is a not-spooky, but thoroughly entertaining, examination of ghost stories and haunted locales throughout America with the express intent of debunking the paranormal and better understanding how ghost stories reflect on our past and present.

Given the book's dark cover and the timing of its release, it seems necessary to reiterate that there's nothing particularly creepy about this book. The author dug through family trees and historic records until he unearthed every inconsistency or blatant lie associated with famous ghost stories or well-known haunted locations. He actively debunks one ghost story after another.

The author posits that ghost stories are malleable, changing throughout the years to accommodate society's various needs:

"Paying attention to the way ghost stories change through the years -- and why those changes are made -- can tell us a great deal about how we face our fears and our anxieties. Even when these stories have a basis in fact and history, there's often significant embellishment and fabrication before they catch on in our imagination, and teasing out these alterations is key to understanding how ghosts shape our relationship to the past."

In addition to stories of ghosts, the author examines several haunted locations, revealing details spanning from the evolution of their (sometimes) bizarre construction to their rise in popularity as a notorious haunt. "The more unusual the house," the author states, "the more likely it'll cause unease among its neighbors and the more we seem to require some kind of story to explain its construction." Additional locations explored include haunted bars and brothels, hotels and restaurants, asylums, graveyards, and more.

Though it doesn't detract from the overall enjoyment of the book, it sometimes feels as though the author drifts off on a tangent. For example, a chapter that begins by introducing a notoriously haunted house eventually segues to a discussion of Spiritualism, which ultimately leads to an examination of a woman's right to vote. These shifts in narrative are never a point of contention for the reader, because all of the information is well-researched and tied together seamlessly.

"This is how ghost stories are born, after all: not from a complete story so much as from bits and pieces that don't quite add up, a kaleidoscope of menace and unease that coalesce in unpredictable ways."

Ghostland: An American History in Haunted Places is a skilfully crafted and compelling book that will appeal to fans of American history, trivia, haunted locales and ghosts.

About the Author

Marco Gobetto was born in Rimini (RN, Italy) in 1967 and took his master’s degree in Electronic Engineering in 1993 at Politecnico of Turin.

He currently holds positions as Manufacturing Training Unit Manager at FIAT Sepin S.c.p.A. and Professor at the Faculty of Automotive Engineering.� He has taught courses in both Production Management and Production Processes, Safety, Organization and Management.

After having complete his University studies, he began his professional career at FIAT Auto S.p.A. in the Manufacturing Engineering Department, as part of the Style Design Manufacturing Analysis Team. From there he proceeded to the position of �Body in White Process Engineer, contributing to the production launches of two new cars in Italy and then coordinating industrialization activities in Poland for a new body in white �model.

In 1998 he moved to Ferrari S.p.A. as Body in White Plant Manager at the “Carrozzeria Scaglietti”� facility in Modena.

In 2000 he left FIAT to assume responsibility for the Manufacturing Engineering Department at Carrozzeria Bertone S.p.A. in Grugliasco (TO,, Italy). �{AU:� PLEASE CONFIRM “TO,,” IT IS OK, IT STANDS FOR “TORINO PREFECTURE” } In two years, three new models of vehicles were launched and, for the first time in Bertone history, second and third shifts in production were activated.

At the beginning of 2002 he rejoined the FIAT Group at ISVOR FIAT S.c.p.A. where he specialized in Total Productive Maintenance and Continuous Improvement training programs, following on �IVECO and FIAT Powertrain sectors. He subsequently coordinated international training initiatives for a joint venture in India between FIAT and TATA.� In 2007 he assumed responsibility for the Manufacturing, Quality and Product Development Training Area that, at the end of 2008, became the central Manufacturing Training Unit in the new training organization in FIAT, thereby contributing to all initiatives worldwide both in FIAT and Chrysler LLC with a major focus on World Class Manufacturing, the Corporate Production System.

I have been interested in getting started but being a person who is not technically inclined I was concerned that I would not be able to to it well. This book give you lots of great tips on funnels and how to build you subscriber lists by making sure you are targeting you market so that you don't lose what you gain. And with anything sometimes the first time you try it may not work so just keep at it. Looking forward to using the strategies outlined here to help me grow my own email subscribers!

This book presents a broad overview of the field of multimedia production. The book describes the field at large, explaining the concepts, rather than focusing on minute details of using particular software packages. Separate chapters are devoted to the multimedia "building blocks", text, sound, images, and video, and the various special characteristics of these media (such as formats and how compression techniques work). A typology of multimedia authoring software is developed, and brief descriptions of individual authoring packages are provided to exemplify each type. The accompanying CD-ROM contains evaluation copies of many of the packages mentioned (such as Macromedia Director, Adobe Freehand, and SoundEdit) for further exploration by the reader. The book also provides extensive coverage of the multimedia development process, from the roles of the members of a multimedia development team, to planning, costing, producing, testing, and delivering products. I have found the book to be quite successful as a textbook for introduction to multimedia courses. It would also be useful for anyone who would like to understand what the multimedia business is all about.

About the Author
George Rodman is professor and chair of the Department of Television and Radio at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, where he has taught for 30 years. His research interests include the role of humor in human communication and the effect of communication technology on psychological well-being.

Rodman is the author, coauthor, and editor of several books, including ten editions of Understanding Human Communication (with Ron Adler, Oxford University Press), four editions of Mass Media Issues (Science Research Associates and Kendall/Hunt), Making Sense of Media (Allyn & Bacon, 2001, and four books on public speaking, including The New Public Speaker (Harcourt Brace, 1997), a book that features the role of public speaking in the media-information age. He has written for newspapers, magazines, journals, film, television, radio, and multimedia programs. He has appeared as both host and guest on local television programs. While in graduate school, he was a winner on The Dating Game on ABC.

Rodman has been listed i Who's Who in Entertainment and Who's Who in Education. He serves as the faculty adviser to The Excelsior, one of a pair of competing campus newspapers that were named third in the nation by the 2005 Princeton Review of America's Best Colleges. In 2005 he was nmaed the Bernard H. Stern Professor of Humor and was awarded the Brooklyn College Award for Excellence in College Citizenship. He has been voted "Favorite Teacher" by graduating seniors several times, most recently in 2008.

In a way, Rodman is genetically predisposed to an interest in mass media. His grandmother was a first cousin to, and grew up with, Hollywood mogul Cecil B. DeMille. His grandfather was a personal lab assistant to Thomas Edison, and was later president of the Radio Manufacturers Association. His father's start-up business ventures included importing European recording equipment, printing, and computer manufacturing.

Rodman lives in Garden City, New York, with his wife Linda and three children: Jennifer, Alexandra, and Dean.

Practical experience meshes with academic theory

I was privileged to review the proofs of the first edition of this book prior to its first publication (by a different publisher) while in graduate school. One reason I was asked to do so was from my perspective of over 20 years in the radio and television industries, mostly on the network level. Another was I had met the author while applying to Brooklyn College for graduate school, although I eventually went somewhere else. The review process helped me to get inside Rodman's mind and see what he was trying to accomplish, and - hopefully, through my remarks in the review reports - help guide that process in a positive way.

Several years later, I began teaching college myself and selected the text and accompanying workbook for my basic introductory course to mass media. I found that the three-fold approach in each chapter provided not only the encyclopedic knowledge necessary, but with the meshing of industry examples and discussion of controversies, the solid underpinnings of a good understanding of the mass media students need.

I've used this book in two editions and in two colleges and find it well received for the most part, with a few who don't quite "get it" of course, and many of my students have said that combined with my lecture style of using the book to reinforce stories from my professional world experience, it helped them focus on a field within mass communications that really interested them.

I really don't think you could go wrong with picking George Rodman's book for a class. Of the many, many texts for an introductory media course, this stands out with the best of them!

good, with notable exceptions

bought this for a college course in Mass Media. Good basics, however, it is a 2009 edition, and some of the info should have been updated - for example it lists "hotwired" (now WIRED) as an example of online media - but hotwired stopped publishing in 2006. Also, the index is kinda spotty, meaning that some key terms are not even listed, and others are listed as being on a certain page, but they are not. I expect a bit more rigorous fact checking and editing from a textbook. Also at least one passage so far seems to have been directly lifted from a 10 year old NYT article without attribution - naughty naughty. I tried to leave feedback on their online "student companion" website, but the feedback feature has been disabled. Since this is a required text, I had to buy it, but if I was teaching the course I might shop around for a better text.

As promised. A textbook.

Clean and neat. Just as described. The text itself is a little ADD in style. I find I have to really make sure I haven't missed anything. There are lots of sidebars and content in boxes and things like that.
