Shutter Island

The less you know the better can be truly said about this popular thriller that takes the reader on a harrowing journey through the battlefields of the human mind with an epic storm and setting that is sure to get the reader’s pulse racing will all the possibilities and mysteries within. If it is a question if you should read the novel first or see the silver screen adaptation before previewing the pages, please learn from my slight error (although I still enjoyed and recommend the movie version) and sit back with a copy of Shutter Island and get ready for a maze-like story with multiple points of interest and slides on the points of reality and insanity. Although the modern spiced language may somewhat disappoint some (if you are looking for authentic sounding dialogue), the presented personalities are just "there" with little color or shading and more than one or two “twists” or “clues” to the final answers are revealed too early in the beginning; this is still a unique novel with its own sinister images and secrets that may really get into the reader’s head by the final page.

Twisty ghost story

Lehane is a master at creating palpable tension between the covers of a book, and nowhere is that more evident than in Shutter Island. Two U.S. Marshals arrive on the island, now a hospital for the criminally insane, to investigate the disappearance of a patient. Along the way, they begin to get hints of disturbing secrets behind the treatments being performed on the prisoner-patients, and find themselves in danger as their presence becomes a threat to the commanding staff and the place’s continued existence.

Or … do they? Lehane bends and twists reality until the reader is no longer entirely sure who they are themselves, let alone the characters on the page in front of them. The way Lehane manipulates the reader’s sense of what’s true mimics the way those delusional patients seem incapable of understanding or adapting to the world around them. By the final gut-punch chapter, I was no longer sure of anything, except that Dennis Lehane is a hell of a writer.

(But seriously, what the hell happened there at the end??)

This is one of the best books I've ever read in my life. I was sorry when it ended, for more reasons than one--but mainly because I didn't have any more of it to read. Lehane is a master of characterization, setting, plotting, narrative, and everything else it takes to be a great writer. What an experience reading Shutter Island was.

Palmer, a broadcaster, orchestral arranger and music writer who has published books on a number of modern composers, discusses the life and works of 11 of the great creators of film scores from 1930 to 1950: Max Steiner, Erich Korngold, Alfred Newman, Franz Waxman, Dimitri Tiomkin, Roy Webb, Miklos Rozsa, Bernard Herrman, Alex North, Elmer Bernstein and Leonard Rosenman. He shows how, after the advent of talking movies in 1929, these men developed a new type of music that enhanced the images on the screen and intensified dramatic effect. Writing in language understandable to the lay reader yet sophisticated enough to hold the interest of the professional musician, he re-creates the powerful spells that many of the famous scenes in movies from Hollywood's Golden Age exerted on audiences and shows how mood was achieved by the brilliant interweaving of music and drama. His analysis should do a great deal to help the movie score gain acceptance as a legitimate form of composition. Illustrations not seen by PW.

An interesting look into the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Although, not a definite work about the great film music composers of the Golden Age (those are few and far between anyway) this one does have it's charms, particularly when the author is writing about one of his favorite artists. But the obvious disdain Palmer seems to have for Max Steiner, or that the great Victor Young is barely mentioned, prevents this book from being as useful as it could have been. Still, if you simply love the movies of the 30's and 40's then you will likely enjoy this. The point of view of the author is closely tied with how the music works in the picture, and the films that are usually mentioned as examples are those that many if not most film buffs will have seen.

Hi! These are the notes from my world history class. Oh, who am I? Well, some people said I was the smartest kid in class. I wrote everything you need to ace WORLD HISTORY, from the FIRST HUMANLIKE CREATURES to the INTERNET AGE, and only the really important stuff in between-you know, the stuff that’s usually on the test!

I tried to keep everything organized, so I almost always:
• Highlight vocabulary words in YELLOW
• Color in definitions in green highlighter
• Use BLUE PEN for important people, places, dates, and terms
• Doodle a pretty sweet Trojan Horse and whatnot

If you’re not loving your textbook and you’re not so great at taking notes in class, this notebook will help. It hits all the major points. (But if your teacher spends a whole class talking about something that’s not covered, go ahead and write that down for yourself.)

Now that I’ve aced world history, this notebook is YOURS. I’m done with it, so this notebook’s purpose in life is to help YOU learn and remember just what you need to ace YOUR world history class.

Great books for homeschooling!

I home school two boys and friends and family are always asking how I know what to teach my kids. It cracks me up, but now I can say I have a guide that tells me everything they need to know for middle school according to Common Core. We officially don't follow Common Core in Texas, but in reality the schools teach it since the kids have to take standardized tests that follow it.

These guides are great! I read them to my 4th and 6th graders and then supplement with YouTube/history channel/etc videos and books with photos. It is nice to know that I am covering at least the minimum they need in case they ever have to go to public schools. God forbid. ;-)

I think these books explain things well and I like the questions at the end of each chapter. These are really a great resource for homeschooling. I personally am not a fan of paying big money for curriculum, so these books are a valuable and affordable resource.

Brutal.

In the first few pages of Dirty White, Walter Farr, a highly successful Wall Street broker, is shanghai'd by the FBI and forced to set up a sting operation designed to catch South American drug merchants as they attempt to invest their ill-gotten profits. One of several plot threads in this international potboiler of a novel revolves around Farr's romance with a female FBI agent assigned to the project. Another is about Farr's relationship with his drug addicted prep school son.

This book has a narrative flow that is fairly straightforward and without too many surprises. That is until the last 50 pages or so when Freemantle rather suddenly sucker punches the reader with a very shocking and completely unexpected turn of events.
