From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2- In Big Lunch, Pete decides to make a sandwich. Of course, the more he adds, the bigger it becomes. This is a good thing because he is really, really hungry. He forgets to remove the wrappers and adds cans, jars, and boxes to the ever-teetering tower of items. As he piles on the food, children's giggles will grow right along with the expanding "sandwich." Once it becomes too big for the small cat to consume, he must think of a clever solution to his dilemma, which he does with a little help from his friends. In Play Ball!, Pete is baseball ready and his team, the Rocks, are facing the Rolls in a big game. The players warm up and, when the game is over, both sides greet one another with high fives. Even though Pete does not play his best game, he has a good attitude about making mistakes and not being sad about errors he made. This is a great title to spark a discussion about sportsmanship. In both books, simple cartoon art in bold colors and large text make the books a treat for beginning readers.-Janene Corbin, Rosebank Elementary School, Nashville, TNα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
Dean’s stoic Pete the Cat heads to the ballpark and does what he does best: react placidly. It’s the Rocks (the cats in red) versus the Rolls (yellow), and no matter how often Pete screws up—and it’s pretty often, as he strikes out, drops a catch, and overthrows—he reacts in the exactly same way: “But Pete is not sad. He did his best.” Again, much of Pete’s humor comes from Dean’s depiction of him as a dour, sleepy-looking fellow regardless of the emotions the text insists that he’s feeling. The purposely flat, simple watercolors further this low-key, cool-cat offering. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Daniel Kraus

But He Tried His Best
By Pop Bop
The Pete-the-Cat books are our favorites in the "My First Level, I Can Read!" series. Pete may not be as well known as Little Critter, Biscuit, Fancy Nancy, or the Berenstain Bears, but his groovy cool factor moves him to the top of our list.

Unlike some of the "I Can Read" books, the Pete books usually have a complete story, with a clear beginning, a couple of developments in the middle, and then a satisfying ending. I like that even in very early readers. What happens makes sense and the endings are sensible, and groovy.

Each fully illustrated page has two sentences, running from four to seven words each. That's a nice length and a good and fair challenge for a little starting reader. The drawings fully support the text, and while they look a bit amateurish at first the characters are actually expressive and presented effectively.

The "message" if you want to call it that, of this book is that you just have to try your best, and whether you get a hit or strike out, whether you drop the fly ball or catch it, the important point is to do your very best. Pete always gives it his all and that what makes him such an interesting hero for such an early reading level series.

So, this is one of the few early readers books that strikes me as "set worthy" and we've been happy to collect them all over time. The paperback versions are particularly good value.

Great embedded lesson within a fantastic story
By Kristine
For those of you who are Pete the Cat fans, and baseball fans alike, this book is fantastic. It focuses on the aspect of perseverance through trying, failing and finally succeeding: something that all kids should understand and sadly don't (no, you are not the best at everything you do immediately but rather through practice). My kids loved it and yours will, too.

The Six Wives of Henry VIII, by Alison Weir

The tempestuous, bloody, and splendid reign of Henry VIII of England (1509-1547) is one of the most fascinating in all history, not least for his marriage to six extraordinary women. In this accessible work of brilliant scholarship, Alison Weir draws on early biographies, letters, memoirs, account books, and diplomatic reports to bring these women to life. Catherine of Aragon emerges as a staunch though misguided woman of principle; Anne Boleyn, an ambitious adventuress with a penchant for vengeance; Jane Seymour, a strong-minded matriarch in the making; Anne of Cleves, a good-natured and innocent woman naively unaware of the court intrigues that determined her fate; Catherine Howard, an empty-headed wanton; and Catherine Parr, a warm-blooded bluestocking who survived King Henry to marry a fourth time.

From School Library Journal
YA-- A wonderfully detailed, extensively researched collective biography. Although the book is undoubtedly the work of a Tudor scholar, with sources ranging from previous biographies of these women to private papers, letters, diaries, and diplomatic sources, it is also the work of a competent fiction writer. The narrative is free flowing, humorous, informative, and readable. Weir's research abilities and deductive reasoning have shed a whole new light on the political maneuverings of the era and thus on the myriad forces that drove Henry VIII, his wives, and his children. Personal and obscure facts about the women, Henry's relationship with his nobles, and quirks of the times enliven the text. Genealogical tables for all the families involved are included. This book can be used for research, as it contains a wealth of information. However, students who don't read the whole book (even though its size may intimidate them) are missing a once in a lifetime opportunity to have the Tudor era laid open for them.

From Kirkus Reviews
Weir (the genealogical Britain's Royal Family--not reviewed) here uses the many public records and personal letters of the early 1500's to offer a comprehensive, factual version of the tempestuous private and public lives of Henry VIII and his six wives. The story is dominated by Henry and the devolution of his character from an ``affable,'' ``gentle,'' and gifted (he wrote poetry) lover, soldier, and ruler into a porcine, paranoid, impotent old man who was exploited and manipulated by courtiers and women, some of whom he imprisoned, beheaded, or hanged. Henry's brother's widow, Catherine of Aragon, six years the king's senior, became at 24 his first wife. Thirty years later, she was set aside for the ambitious ``virago'' Anne Boleyn, who was in turn beheaded to make room for the gentle Jane Seymour, who died in childbirth and was replaced by the repugnant and scholarly Anne of Cleves. Soon, Anne was retired for Catherine Howard, a 15-year-old ``empty- headed wanton'' who, despite Henry's passion for her, was executed- -along with three alleged but innocent lovers--and replaced by the king's most ``agreeable wife,'' Catherine Parr, who narrowly escaped execution herself for religious quarreling. Vowing in marriage to be ``bonair and buxom/amiable/in bed and at board'' and to produce heirs, Henry's wives illustrate to Weir, through their pregnancies, miscarriages, and infants' deaths, both the profligacy of nature and the dependence of political power on sexual prowess. Yet Weir offers this sensational chapter in history in the cautious tone of a college term paper, doggedly and unimaginatively piling up facts and occasionally lapsing into naivet‚, as when Mary (whose mother, Catherine of Aragon, had been banished to die alone) and Elizabeth (still too young to understand that Henry had beheaded her mother, Anne Boleyn, in order to marry Jane) are invited to court: ``At last the King,'' Weir writes, ``was settling down to something resembling family life.'' (Sixteen pages of b&w illustrations; 74 pages of responsible bibliographical essays.) (Book-of-the-Month Dual Selection for May) -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

One of My Favorites Each Time I Read I Read It!
By Diane G.
I love this book! It is the first book I read authored by Alison Weir and it remains my favorite. When I first held the book in my hands my first thought was, "This is a pretty big book about 6 wives of one king. I really hope this is going to be interesting and not a dull recount of facts and dates". When I finished the book I knew that anyone with even a passing curiosity about history would have found this to be an amazing book to read. Yes, there were facts and dates galore but presented within a story that was absorbing, engrossing, and entertaining as well. I found that while reading the book it was most helpful to me to have my laptop next to me so that I could pull up images of the locations being discussed in the book. This added an additional level of enjoyment because this enabled me to see exactly what the author was describing in the book. I could see the actual paintings that were brought up in the book as well as portraits of the people. Not only was I sad to see the book come to the end but I was launched into a search to read the books that were used for reference and research purposes. I have read this book several times by now and when I saw the book come up on a Amazon Deal e-mail, purchasing it for my Kindle has now enabled me to literally have the book at my fingertips to read wherever I am.

Weir or Fraser?
By Tuckerby
What’s Great: the writing, which makes this book a delight to read. Weir paints each wife with color and depth so that we come to know them across the centuries: the “staunch but misguided woman of principle,” the “ambitious adventuress with a streak of vengeance,” the “strong-minded matriarch,” the “good-humored woman,” the “empty-headed wanton,” and the “godly matron” with a weakness for “handsome rogues.”

Why I don’t give this book 5 stars: because I don’t know how much of the information I can trust. Weir is a novelist who embellishes her narrative with colorful flourishes that make for excellent reading, but which may also distort the actual events and influence our perceptions. Saying that Henry stomped off in a huff is certainly more lively than saying he left the room, but unless his emotional state is corroborated by witnesses, Weir’s depiction is artistic license rather than documented fact. It’s also sometimes hard to tell when Weir is presenting her own conclusions and when she is relaying what she’s found in source material. When she writes that Henry wanted Elizabeth “kept out of his sight” after Anne Boleyn’s execution, is this her interpretation or what a contemporary actually observed? What also makes me question Weir’s interpretations is that I don’t always find her explanations convincing. For example, she postulates that Jane Seymour’s delay in conceiving was probably due to Henry and his “advancing infirmity,” as evidenced by the fact that his later wives bore no children. We can never really know why it took Jane several months to conceive. She could have had irregular menstrual cycles. Henry’s physical condition in 1536 was very different from his state in the 1540s, and any impotence there may have been during his later years would not necessarily have afflicted him earlier. The reasoning just seems flimsy to me. Lastly, some of Weir’s information is not corroborated by professional historians, making me question her analysis and assessment of sources.
.
Still, I can’t deny that I enjoyed reading this book, and found it accurate enough (that is, the information matched what I’ve found in other books) to recommend. For reading pleasure, I put it ahead of Antonia Fraser’s book of the same title, but Fraser’s is the one I believe. She seems less prone to presenting her opinions as facts and offers more plausible explanations for her views than Weir.

Alison Weir is awesome
By C. Sandru
I never get tired of reading any of Ms. Weir's books. This one is just as great, with many details of his life that I didn't know about. Great read, great drama, lots of drama in fact when it comes to this dude. No wonder he is still fascinating hundreds of years later. What I find intriguing about that whole time period is that the more things change the more they stay the same. The same drive for power, money, influence, sex, religion and fame back then is alive and well today. I can only giggle at the thought of Henry on Twitter. "Anne is the best", "Anne betrayed me". "The Pope sucks", "I am the best there ever was", "I love a good wedding, don't you?"

The worldwide phenomenon continues as Eva and Gideon face the demons of their pasts, and accept the consequences of their obsessive desires...

From the moment I first met Gideon Cross, I recognized something in him that I needed. Something I couldn't resist. I saw the dangerous and damaged soul inside--so much like my own. I was drawn to it. I needed him as surely as I needed my heart to beat.

No one knows how much he risked for me. How much I'd been threatened, or just how dark and desperate the shadow of our pasts would become.

Entwined by our secrets, we tried to defy the odds. We made our own rules and surrendered completely to the exquisite power of possession...

Amazon Exclusive: Interview with Sylvia Day

After naming Sylvia Day’s Bared to You a 2012 Best Book of the Year in Romance and devouring Reflected in You, we've been anxiously awaiting the release of the third book in Day's scorching Crossfire series, Entwined with You. To whet our appetites and make waiting for the book's arrival a little easier, Amazon Romance expert Alyssa Morris spoke with Day about what’s next for Gideon and Eva, her upcoming collaboration with Harlequin and Cosmopolitan, her all-time favorite romance novels, and much more.

Alyssa Morris: Now that you’ve had a bit of time to absorb the success of Bared to You, does it feel real? Or are you still surprised?

Sylvia Day: I'm still surprised! I’m glad I’m a veteran and that I’ve been publishing for close to 10 years, so I had some experience under my belt as far as dealing with it. But on the other hand, there’s no way to anticipate writing something that becomes a global phenomenon, you know. I don’t know about other writers--I didn’t even dream about anything like that. I always figured that it just happened to the Stephenie Meyers and J.K. Rowlings of the world. So, yeah, I don’t think I’ll ever get over being surprised that I had a series that struck such a chord.

AM: It just hit such a moment in our culture, where all of a sudden this is what everyone wants to be reading. It’s an interesting confluence.

SD: Right. We always talk about that, about right book, right time. Random House released Fifty Shades on the same day I self-published Bared to You, so talk about the right timing. Just… wow!

AM: Do you have a favorite moment in the Crossfire series so far?

SD: You know, I really loved the weekend that Gideon and Eva spent in the Outer Banks. These poor guys. When they’re alone, they’re fine. Life is perfect when they’re alone. Unfortunately, they don’t get a lot of time alone. [Laughs] So I just love that. I love seeing them together away from all of the distractions and intrusions and everything else that’s going wrong in their lives.

I can’t talk too much about Entwined with You because it’s not out yet. And that’s so hard, because I so want to talk tabout it! But there’s more alone time with Gideon and Eva as we move forward in the series and they grow stronger, so I’m really enjoying that as a writer.

A Goodreads Choice Awards Finalist for Best Romance of 2013

"Day's highly anticipated third Crossfire novel is worth the wait. Eva and Gideon's relationship reaches a new level, and while they continue to struggle with mistakes from their past, there's no denying the fiery passion that blazes between the two. It's been a delight watching Eva grow into a strong, confident woman, and even Gideon makes some progress as a partner worthy of such a fantastic heroine." - RT Book Reviews

"Day takes romantic love by the scruff of the neck and injects it with a Class-A drug for added intensity, but in Entwined with You also produces a love story that is ultimately sophisticated, engaging, clever and sweet." - The Irish Independent

"... the characters are compelling, and the book itself is well written and the characterization is interesting. The sex scenes in this book are extremely hot and they do advance the connection between the characters." - Dear Author

"The Crossfire series raises the bar... Although they may have been victims in the past, they are no longer. Strengthen by their resolve to take control of their lives, instead of being controlled by their past; both Eva and Gideon display great character development. I highly recommend Entwined with You." - Night Owl Reviews

So Disappointed
By AbbieW
I expected an ending but was left hanging. Trilogy means three, but not here I guess.
Bared to You, Reflected in You, Entwined with You...Well, Sylvia Day, here's what I am: Finished with You.

For shame Sylvia Day
By Kayrock
For shame Sylvia Day. As if paying $30 for one character's story isn't bad enough-- it isn't even finished! Never mind it was originally billed as a trilogy. Never mind that you have pushed the release date back... Unprofessional.

I love Eva. I think she deserves a great story that, in the end, is tied up in the perfect bow. This book had absolutely no plot to it. It could have been a novella if the editors took out every time Gideon and Eva said ' I love you ' to one another. The drawn out emotional conversations that led nowhere were trying and tiring. In addition, there is no further character development than the last book.. Eva is still hopelessly dependent on this relationship; Gideon is still trying to prove himself to her; Eva's mom is still controlling; Cary is still trying to have his cake and eat it too; Brett is still thinking he has a shot with her; Corinne is still on my nerves etc.

I'm a little glad this book is getting bad reviews, because I'm so disappointed that I can't in good conscience purchase another of Sylvia Day's books. As a consumer I feel used and taken advantage of-- and I hate that I looked forward to this book so much...

Very Disappointed
By mfisch
I was so looking forward to this book coming out, I pre-ordered. Boy was I disappointed. I keep looking at how far into the book I was and thinking there are a lot of loose ends to wrap up before it ends .... and why is she introducing all this stuff now? I was very disappointed in the fluff and thin story line. When I found out she is stretching this out to not 4 BUT 5 books, I decided I'm DONE. I, like so many other readers, thought Trilogy meant three. I don't like being sold a false bill of goods.
