It was love at first sight

That was fifty years ago. I was ten or eleven, Catch 22 was a year old or maybe two. My brother, in college, recommended this book. I liked it so much I read it beginning on New Year every year until I went to college. I just reread it for the first time in forty some years. It’s still brilliant. It’s still startlingly funny and it still hurts down deep.
It rose above the realistic novels written immediately after the Second World War. It rose above Mailer and Jones and Shaw. When asked why he’d never written another book like Catch 22, Heller’s answer was “Who has?” Of course he was right. A couple of the great wave of novels that followed the Second World War stand shoulder to shoulder with the catch; Slaughter House Five and Gunter Grass’s Dog Years come to my mind. Lots of very good novels came out of the war, first novels from writers like Gore Vidal and Norman Mailer, Irwin Shaw and James Jones, Thomas Heggens, who won a Tony for the stage version of his novel, Mr. Roberts, James Gould Cozzens, who won a Pulitzer for Guard of Honor. None of those good books compare. Catch 22 entered the language. For a few years the blue paperback with the dancing soldier puppet was everywhere.
Yossarian, the novel’s hero, spends the novel trying not to die in the war. A difficult job, since his colonel raises the number of missions he must fly from twenty-five to seventy, in an attempt to impress the Saturday Evening Post. Since I last read this I served in the army, where sooner or later everybody winds up working for Colonel Cathcart. I’m thinking that besides its anarchic appeal for youth, there were at that time millions of Veterans many of whom shared it’s cynicism about the organizations they worked for.
If you’ve never read it, you’ve missed a great read. If you read it a long time ago It might be time to enjoy it again. I suspect you’ll still laugh whenever Heller tells you to. And like love at first sight it will probably still break your heart.

A reread for me!

Read this book in high school an wanted to read it again so I decided to buy it. Super excited to have it and I also purchased the squeal, which I haven't had the time to read yet but is on the list for this summer while I'm not taking classes. This book is a satire making fun of the Vietnam war, if you are looking for a dark sense of humor this book is it, but if you don't understand that type of humor I would not recommend it. Joseph Heller does a great job at giving you a mental image of everything that is going on. It is one of those books that you can place yourself in like you are sitting right next to the character telling the story.

It's a hard read but well worth it. The book's background is about second world war and how the rationale behind lots of decisions could be self interest of individuals, stupidity and profiteering. I think the same thing applies to pretty much any realm of life -- a lot of corporate decision making definitely falls into this.. Even in individual homes, head of households can frequently make wrong decisions for him/herself or on behalf of family members, more due to lack of knowledge and empathy... The book ends with the message that each individual is responsible for his own life and can't just blindly let someone else make decisions for them or let things just happen.. Take charge of your own life..

A great resource

This text book is a wonderful resource for all wanting to learn more about economics in the international arena. It is packed full of facts, graphs, and explanations. One problem I did find in this book is that it tried cover too broad a field. If it would have concentrated on one specific topic like the international economics, and left out the finance, it could be a much stronger work. I grew tired of hearing "as you already know..." It could have not made so many assumtions about what students already knew and used the extra area to cover them. All in all, it was a helpful resource for extra learning, however, I would suggest looking further for a book that will stand alone in teaching an international economics course.

This book could be really good if you just need it to reference information that you may need for a research project. The quizzes are not as simple because you can't find the answer in the book. I believe the author should look at this material more closely because it's not helpful to students. If you are considering economics as your major, you may think again after using this book.

economical & high quality

I purchased 2 of these dictionaries on behalf of two of my ESL students who are Nepali refugees from Bhutan. It has been hard to find Nepali/English bilingual dictionaries, and I was happy to find this one as a good alternative to the other good Nepali/English dictionary by Anil Mandal. The Mandal dictionary is also a good dictionary, however as far as I have found, the Mandal is only available in hard cover, and therefore is about $20 more than this paperback copy. I recommend this dictionary as the more economical alternative to the Nepali/English dictionary by Mandal. I hope to come across more of these! I have a large number of Bhutanese refugees in my class and many are now saying that they would like one, too!

Most useful for quick reference

This dictionary is very useful for finding words quickly in English or Nepali. The number of different words included is excellent and the size and weight of the book make it reasonably portable. But "concise" means it does not include definitions. I also like the use of both the Roman transliteration and Devanagri forms of the Nepali words, which helps with learning to read Devanagri. But I'm shocked at the inflated price listed here on Amazon. Hopefully this little gem is available still at a much lower price in Kathmandu. I have a variety of E-N/N-E dictionaries and this one is the most useful for quick reference.

The author makes good use of graphics and careful wording to make his ideas clear. In the places where he is forced to wave his hands due to complexity beyond the scope of an introductory text, he explicitly indicates what he's doing. The text would be enhanced by the availability of on-line or standalone software permitting students to execute the algorithms and machines provided.
