The bible for any visit to the temples...plus the best restaurant tips

This book is one of the best travel guides I have ever had in my hands (full disclosure: I am a fanatic when it comes to ancient cultures, something not every reader will share). Where to start? Rooney, a PhD in art history, offers a detailed description of all major and minor temples, suggested paths to explore them, and fascinating background info. Each temple is shown in a photograph, a drawn map is provided, and all relevant info given in a concise way (i.e., time built, period, king, religion). This is not your typical Lonely Planet or Rough Guide. This is a thick, heavy book for those interested in diving into the culture and history of one of the wonders of the world. When my girlfriend and I spent 7 days in Siam Reap, we relied on this book to select the sites most interesting to us. The author groups temples in half-day visits in order to allow the visitor to plan her time better - a very smart approach as most people are overwhelmed by the sheer number of possible temples and regrettably just follow the standard tourist routes (Small and Grand Tour Circuit). With Rooney's book in your hands, you don't need a human guide anymore, just a tuktuk driver or a rented mountain bike to carry you around.
The book offers so much more, though. While probably designed as an after-thought, Rooney provides hotel and restaurant recommendations for both Siam Reap and Phnom-Penh. We found them to be more accurate than a second travel guide on Cambodia that we had brought along. We also have to credit Rooney to encourage us to visit the wonderful capital of Phnom Penh and its spectacular National Museum BEFORE heading out to the temples. There was no better introduction into the Khmer life than wandering through the museum in Phom Penh.
Most visitors come only once in their life to Siam Reap to explore the temples. Most regret spending only a few days there. If you are blessed to be able to visit the temples, do it right - take Rooney's guide with you in order to really get your arms around the Khmer culture and explore exciting smaller temples many tourist fail to visit.

I bought this guide for a trip to Cambodia based on reviews online. I'm a very picky person, so this was a leap of faith to me.
It was the best choice i ever made. This guide is amazingly detailed.
You feel like you're in Angkor temples. The book provides several step-by-step tour guides to you.
It provides tons of information and talks about all Angkor temples, even the ones on the off beaten track.
It almost don't require a tour guide.

A disappointing book

As someone who lived through the Apartheid years in South Africa, this book looked as if it would be a fascinating read. All the blurb and the set-up suggested some very revelatory reading and I sped into the book once purchased. What a disappointment on a number of levels. Firstly the "revelations" were not really that interesting. Secondly, I found that the book did not really grapple with the moral issues which faced the author. I suspect that she does not have the intellect or appreciation of what happened during those years to really grapple with them and then express them herself. If this were so we would have found a really disturbing retrospective account of the moral dilemmas that she faced and her "baring of the soul", as promised, would have carried a level of conviction which this book never rose to.
Probably the most moving and "real" episode of her life was the writing about the loss of her child. Here I could relate to her emotions. I am afraid in the rest of the book I could not. A very disappointing experience.

The book is a nice way if you are a little bit rusty with your enterprise skills and like to refresh those. If you are new to the topic the samples and explantations are a little bit too short and you have to figure out some stuff on your own.

Very information dense book

This is a very information dense book. I was prepared to be disappointed when it arrived because it was so thin. I was instead very pleased. The book is a walkthrough of a little RESTful web services application automating a hotel booking agency. The code examples downloadable from PACKT Published have all worked without any bugs and I have found only one insignificant typo in the book. Highly recommend.

Good book overall. Worth the money for the most part. Explanations need to be more thorough though, found some gaps which I had
to fill in myself so I had to take off one star. Had to do some research to get the examples to work when using other databases
like Oracle.

This is my all time favorite manga. I'm so glad it's coming out in English. This manga is dark, gross, depressing, and depicts a world with just miserable characters everywhere you turn. The majority of characters are depicted as just all around horrible people. I love it. The ending is amazing, it impacted me in a different way then other mangas, tv shows, movies and books do. I highly encourage anyone who reads this, to read it all the way till the end.

In the 3rd and 4th volumes of Goodnight Punpun, more backstory unfolds about side characters, and the scope is expanded, not to a harmful extent, but rather a closer look on personalities and human nature. The artwork is beautiful, and the writing is strong. It is incredibly dark, and depressing. There is a level of maturity, like the first perhaps not expected by the cover. This is a coming of age story at its most gripping, and very enjoyable.

Psychology 101 and more...

Do you love trying to figure people out? If you do this book may interest you. However it will also give your brain a good workout. It is definitely a little more challenging than most of the Dummies books I've read.

This book contains information on depression, altered states of consciousness, meditation, altruism, assertiveness, social identity, parenting styles, the different types of intelligence, emotions, personality types and developmental stages of life. If you are interested in mental disorders this book also discusses autism, schizophrenia, PTSD, ADHD, OCD and more.

In the section on the brain there were a few good pictures which will help those unfamiliar with basic biology.

I will say that Freud would have had a thing or two to say about Dr. Cash's recurrent dreams. I'm not so sure I'd have told people about that dream.

This book is filled with interesting tidbits like how most people are spending six hours a day watching TV. How is this even possible? Yikes. No wonders people don't get how I can review so much. I have no cable.

So overall this book is an entertaining read with lots of helpful information for those interested in knowing themselves and others better.

Good for Course Takers

I only recently completed my mandatory Psychology class for college, and enjoyed it. However, I would have liked to have used this book while I was taking the course to immerse myself in more examples. My book contained a lot of theory but not always application. I have retained my Psychology book (it was school specific), and I think it would be easy to bounce back and forth from your primary text to this book for a different expression of the same basic material.

If you are struggling in class, I think this could help out your grade by including more real-world examples to help the material stick. I also feel this will be a great overview for a person who was never forced to take a Psychology class but would like to have a basic understanding for dinner table conversation or Jeopardy.

Nice Addition To The "Dummies" Series: A Commendable Job Covering Quite A Bit Of Ground

I must commend Dr. Cash for an outstanding contribution to the Dummies series. He covers a tremendous amount of ground and by the end of the book I felt I had a good (though very superficial) introduction to the subject. Cash provides enough to spur the curious reader on to deeper research. I say "curious" rather than "serious" because this book is still too superficial for even a Psych 101 class.

I usually skip and skim Dummies books, but I found myself reading this book from cover to cover. Dr. Cash's writing style is casual and witty like a Dummies book should be and I never felt like he was condescending in his writing or writing above the reading level of a typical Dummies book reader.

Bottom line, I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

A must for any EC teacher's library

I rarely review textbooks, but this one deserves a huge shout-out. We're using this for a graduate-level special education course, and although I'm nearly finished with the program and have been working as an EC teacher for a couple of years, there's still loads of information in this textbook that I've never seen represented before. For example, none of my textbooks has ever shown a chart of which IQ ranges correspond to mild, moderate, severe, and profound intellectual disability. The organization of topics is thoughtful, and it's nice to have entire chapters devoted to learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, hearing loss, blindness, and gifted/talented students; these topics often get shortchanged (or are completely overlooked) in textbooks for teacher-preparation programs focusing on severe/profound disabilities. Although I've rented the e-textbook for the semester, I'll be paying the difference to purchase it once the rental period has expired.

Informative, but Visually Overwhelming

To "Go New" or not: That is the question.

I wouldn't, but I already have my M.Ed. If you're just starting your career as a teacher, or just starting to learn about becoming a teacher--especially of exceptional children--you'll probably get a lot of use out of this text. It's an excellent reference.

Indeed, this books has a ton of information in tiny print on glossy pages. It breaks up information to insert helpful teaching aides or stories about teachers doing the right things--which, on their surface are very helpful. I have no complaints about the content. But the format! The organization! Ugh.

THINGS TO NOTE:

When I'm reading about a technical topic, I don't want the information interrupted mid-paragraph or mid-section for a two-page spread about a teacher who is using a technique I read about three or four pages ago (or will read about in another page or two, under a separate subheading). Finish the section and then give me examples, or give me examples and then explain them in the section. Don't break up an unrelated section just to put in your colorful insert (and they are very colorful) before the chapter ends.

More, I don't want to see charts several pages away from the information they're trying to explain. I don't want two or three pages of charts in the middle of one section of text. I hate flipping back and forth, and flipping back and forth feels like all I do with this book.

OVERALL:

Again, the content is wonderful. I found the text balanced, fair, insightful, helpful, and up-to-date. But I couldn't get past the formatting. You go from walls of text where bold, italics, and sub-sized fonts run rampant to big, colorful splashes filled with more content, to two-page inserts complete with pictures, to charts with small font, back to tons of text--and few of the beautiful, colorful features make a lot of sense where they are placed. The reading experience is visually overwhelming, and the organization within the chapters is awful.

That said, the overall organization of the book is very nice--it builds well--and the chapters are informative. I would have preferred more information and techniques for "gifted and talented" children (they do get one chapter), but that isn't really the focus of this book. As a broad overview, it does its job--and it's obvious why this is a common choice for education classes. Just be prepared to read with your sunglasses on, and have your fingers poised for constant flipping.

Bad Access Code

The access code I received did not work. When I contacted Pearson's tech support, they told me the code was "incompatible" with the book and I would have to get a refund. I contacted Pearson a second time and insisted they resolve the issue, at which point they expired the unworkable code and gave me a new one. All in all, I spent roughly an hour fixing this. I was not pleased.

Topic Well Developed !!!!!!!!!!

I am giving 5 stars to this book due to the following reasons: (1) The book is very complete on the subject. The author does not only explain based on his experience but also he is deeping enough in theory so there is a good balance. (2) The explanation on the "belief patters" is very good and this topic is interrelated in several chapters. (3) You can find very interesting statements well supported like the followings: "Being happy in the face of adversity is the best way to defeat adversity"; "When the attack is made to control the individual to whom the thoughts are directed, regardless of the reasons for such control, this psychic attack is an act of moral malpractice, more commonly referred to as black magic"; "It is always better to develop the moral nature than to simply seek spiritual power"; "The only true purpose for magical practice is for the elevation of the human soul through the demonstration of the living presence of the Creator of all things"; "Most spirits lose all of their vital energy in the first attack"; "Any attack by a spirit of the human dead is not usually successful"; "Once we have broken our negative speech habits, we can begin to break our negative thought patterns";" The person with a trained mind has few or no belief patterns within their mind. They hold nothing sacred except their Creator". (4) I have already explained in one of my previous reviews for this author, the book is well explained, clear, and with real life examples of a real magician with deep knowledge. (5) The author provides useful exercises, etc.

I wish the author could deep more in the following statement with more evidence or real examples even though it is a sensitive statement: "It might be well to point out here that those who have teachers who pass through mediums have them because they have not yet earned the right to a living spiritual teacher. True spiritual teachers are living human beings who will speak your language and who will communicate with you face-to-face".

I don't agree with the author regarding the following statement: "Possession by demons and devils is always a mental pathology" and even though I have not had any direct experience regarding this topic, I have read several books on the topic (Gabriele Amorth, Corrado Balducci, and Jose Antonio Fortea among others authors). If the author would have explained this topic deep enough to change my mind about it, I would probably have had to change my belief pattern or at least to modify it.

There is a lot of very interesting information in this book. I recommend it.

I have read (I think) all of Draja's books, and hold all of them close to me, but this one actually brought me to tears. The information in this book is far more then the title reveals it self to be. The kind words at the end of chapter 7 have given me more inspiration then any book has ever given me. The human mind is an on going machine which requires conscious guidance on our end of the spectrum to achieve harmony within our selves. Thank you Draja for this publication!!!
