4 and ½ Stars! Irish Hero Survives an Australian Sheep Station
By Regan
Set in Australia in the mid 19th century, this is the story of Sarah Markham whose father is a sheep rancher, and Dominic Gallagher, a Irish convict who was transported to Australia for a crime he didn’t commit and was then “purchased” by Sarah’s father to serve out his 15-year sentence. Because he is a man who speaks up when events call for it, he is whipped and abused. Sarah intervenes to save his life.

The handsome Irish rogue knows Sarah is attracted to him, as most women are. But the odd thing to him is that he is attracted to her—a tall, skinny and plain woman. Robards, as usual, serves up delicious tension and some exciting action as life in New South Wales on the sheep station presents many dangers: convict uprisings, fires, rustlers and draught. Meanwhile, Sarah’s father is trying to get her to wed his ranch manager who has a cruel, evil side.

I loved the picture of the brooding sexy Irish hero—an alpha male to be sure—thrust into the dusty Australian frontier where life is even harder than what he left behind in Ireland where he longs to return. Both Sarah, who is biased against convicts, and Dominic, who has suffered wrong at the hands of his mother and now Sarah’s father, have trust issues they must overcome. And Dominic has connections to an English earl…

Robards’ portrayal of Australia is vivid (had me reaching for a glass of water!) and her characters very well drawn. A worthy read combining a favorite hero origin and a fascinating time in history.

Dark Torment
By tjarch
First let me say that I love every book I've read by Karen Robards except this one. The parts I didn't like the most was how after the hero and heroine made love, the heroine felt ashamed and dirty because she made love to a convict. She kept calling the hero convict to make sure he knew his place. They supposedly fall in love and he asks her to marry him. What do you think happens, she tells him she can't marry him because he is a convict and what would people say. She is more worried about how she would treated by her community. She knows he really didn't do what he was convicted of. She was just to much into you are a convict and I'm way better than you. I don't know I was just really disappointed in this story.

Couldn't get into the story
By Patriot1776
This book started out slowly and maintained a fairly boring pace through the first half. I believe this is one of Karen Robards' earlier works, and it definitely shows. The H & H were underdeveloped characters. I liked Dominic much better than Sarah, and we did at least find out his backstory (halfway through the book or so). The way the two of them treated each other throughout the whole book was abominable. It made me think of immature teenagers who have no idea how to handle interpersonal relationships. They called each other horrible names regularly, and frankly all of the sniping got on my nerves. Their treatment of each other (particularly Sarah's treatment of Dominic) is not my idea of true love. True dysfunction, maybe, but not love. I know we all have different tastes and preferences, but I don't understand how anyone has rated this book at more than two stars. Save your money unless you can get it at a bargain rate.

A Century of Genocide: Utopias of Race and Nation, by Eric D. Weitz

Why did the twentieth century witness unprecedented organized genocide? Can we learn why genocide is perpetrated by comparing different cases of genocide? Is the Holocaust unique, or does it share causes and features with other cases of state-sponsored mass murder? Can genocide be prevented?

Blending gripping narrative with trenchant analysis, Eric Weitz investigates four of the twentieth century's major eruptions of genocide: the Soviet Union under Stalin, Nazi Germany, Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge, and the former Yugoslavia. Drawing on historical sources as well as trial records, memoirs, novels, and poems, Weitz explains the prevalence of genocide in the twentieth century--and shows how and why it became so systematic and deadly.

Weitz depicts the searing brutality of each genocide and traces its origins back to those most powerful categories of the modern world: race and nation. He demonstrates how, in each of the cases, a strong state pursuing utopia promoted a particular mix of extreme national and racial ideologies. In moments of intense crisis, these states targeted certain national and racial groups, believing that only the annihilation of these "enemies" would enable the dominant group to flourish. And in each instance, large segments of the population were enticed to join in the often ritualistic actions that destroyed their neighbors.

This book offers some of the most absorbing accounts ever written of the population purges forever associated with the names Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, and Milosevic. A controversial and richly textured comparison of these four modern cases, it identifies the social and political forces that produce genocide.

From Publishers Weekly
University of Minnesota history professor Weitz offers a sobering comparative study of four of the past century's genocidal regimes: Stalin's Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, Cambodia under Pol Pot and Bosnia in the 1990s. (While acknowledging that the Holocaust was unprecedented, Weitz explicitly rejects the notion that it was "unique" and incomparable to other genocides.) Weitz begins with a tightly argued account of how Enlightenment thought, together with 19th-century romanticism's nostalgia for an imagined and innocent past, combined to provide the intellectual underpinning for the growth of nationalism and racism, which provided the 20th-century engine for state-organized genocide. Weitz then explores the historical precedents in each country, providing context for a comparison of how each government accomplished its horrific goals. There is much new in Weitz's analysis and his isolation of the common mechanisms of state-sponsored genocide is an invaluable contribution to the literature on the subject, such as his discussion of the prevalence of one-on-one brutality in the cases of Serbian, Nazi and Cambodian atrocities. The descriptions of the mechanisms for the purges, specifically how each government made large sections of their population complicit in the crimes, is chilling. Despite its analytical and reasoned approach, this work cannot be read without feeling outrage, despair and horror. Weitz's work raises profound questions about the human capacity for violence.

Review

One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2003

"There is much new in Weitz's analysis and his isolation of the common mechanisms of state-sponsored genocide is an invaluable contribution to the literature on the subject. . . . Despite its analytical and reasoned approach, this work cannot be read without feeling outrage, despair and horror. Weitz's work raises profound questions about the human capacity for violence."--Publishers Weekly

"An important, thought-provoking book on an inordinately complex subject."--Gavriel Rosenfeld, The New Leader

"Weitz has produced something exceedingly rare: a scholarly book one cannot put down. This is a meritorious, thoughtful book."--Choice

"Weitz makes a persuasive case that these genocides were not simply anarchic eruptions of age-old hatreds, but rather were engineered by crisis-ridden regimes promoting utopian visions requiring a radical refashioning of the population."--Martin Farrell, Perspectives on Politics

"A Century of Genocide has much to offer. It will serve as an excellent first introduction to Lenin and Stalin's crimes, the Holocaust, the Cambodian massacres of the 1970s and the ethnic cleansing in Yugoslavia."--Brendon Simms, Times Higher Education Supplement

""A] book that must be read and that must be argued over. Without an understanding of the issues [it] tackle[s] with passion and in depth, the desire to intervene--to prevent ethnic cleansing or genocide--is meaningless."--Rima Berns-McGown, International Journal

"This important, highly thoughtful book is a welcome addition to the growing literature on genocide in the twentieth century. It deserves a wide audience among scholars, undergraduates, and policy makers. Broad ranging, genuinely comparative, rigorous, and learned, A Century of Genocide is engagingly written, while prudent and balanced in its judgments."--Frank Chalk, Slavic Review

From the Inside Flap
"In his well-documented comparative account of five mass killings in the twentieth century, Eric Weitz has uniquely perceived the ideological connections and analogous revolutionary crises that resulted in 'a century of genocide.' Not only does his book demonstrate that human rights safeguards are indispensable for preventing human rights disasters, but it will help identify early warnings of future crimes against humanity."--David Weissbrodt, David Weissbrodt, coauthor of International Human Rights and Member, United Nations Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights

"This ambitious and broad-ranging study of genocide in the twentieth century is one of the most illuminating works of comparative history to appear in recent years. It shows in graphic and sometimes gut-wrenching detail how a vicious combination of racist ideology, power hungry leadership, and a popular willingness to participate in mass murder can result in the most appalling crimes against humanity. We can hope to prevent genocide only if we understand it, and this book is a major contribution to such an awareness."--George M. Fredrickson, author of Racism: A Short History

"This is a passionate, persuasive, and elegantly argued study of the genocidal policies and behavior of four twentieth-century regimes that are rarely systematically compared."--David Chandler, author of Brother Number One: A Political Biography of Pol Pot

"Weitz brings a wealth of learning and understanding to the problem of genocide. His book is sensible and even-handed all the way through, breaking free of staid categories of analysis. Innovative and refreshing in tone, it traces its devastating story right down to the local level, where, after all, genocide happens."--Robert Gellately, author of Backing Hitler: Consent and Coercion in Nazi Germany

"Eric Weitz's Century of Genocide is a model of comparative history. Brilliantly organized around the themes of race and nation, it keenly analyzes both the similarities and differences between the genocidal regimes of Hitler's Germany and Pol Pot's Cambodia and the genocidal actions of Stalin's Soviet Union and Milosevic's Greater Serbia."--Christopher Browning, author of Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland

It lacks something
By pnotley@hotmail.com
Several years ago Eric Weitz wrote a fascinating book about the German Communist Party which argued that its notoriously truculent and dogmatic nature was not simply the result of Stalinist domination, but instead reflected the party's own German traditions as well as an understandable reaction to Weimar's intolerance of them. One would think that Weitz would be an excellent author to write about twentieth-century genocide. But this comparative account of four major genocides is disappointing. By his own admission Weitz does not have sufficient scholarly expertise to study the genocides in Armenia and Rwanda. So instead he looks first at Soviet terror in general and the more specifically genocidal deportations carried out against various nationalities during and after World War Two. Then he looks at Nazi Germany, Pol Pot Cambodia and the Serbian attack on Bosnia. All of his four accounts share certain key similarities. First, all the perpetrators were moved by a utopian ideology. Second, all the perpetrators were in some way or another "modern" and sought to use modern instruments to carry out their crimes. Third, all the genocides took place in periods of profound social and political crisis. Fourth, all the genocides were able to use the mass complicity of the society as a whole. Fifth, all the genocides had their own savage rituals of inhumanity.
Not bad, and the discussion of the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany are based on a reasonable discussion of the latest research. But there are some real problems with Weitz's account. For a start consider the "utopian" nature of genocide. Weitz does not define what a "utopia" is. This is rather important, since "utopian" implies the impossible, indeed the impossible that it would be dangerous to attempt. But while the Holocaust was a uniquely cruel atrocity, it was hardly "utopian" since it was, in fact, all too possible to kill 90% of Polish Jewry. More problematically, to what extent can Serbian nationalism be viewed as utopian? Undoubtedly some people thought a victorious Greater Serbia would lead to a better future. But the dominant themes in Serbian propaganda were paranoia, fear and self-pity. Instead of looking to a glorious millennium, Serbs concentrated on the "collective guilt" of Croats and Bosnians with Nazism. What Utopias did the Hutus dream of, or the final rulers of the Ottoman Empire have? One may agree with Weitz that Hitler and his colleagues believed in a "redemptive" anti-Semitism. But how far did this filter down to his executioners? (It strikes me that Arno Mayer's oft-derided "Why did the Heavens Not Darken," about the connection of the Holocaust to a vicious war against Communism, does better at answering this question.) The modernity of "genocide" is also problematic. That is certainly the case with Cambodia. Weitz's focus on ideology and ideological logic does not explain why Pol Pot followed a path that no other Communist party did. At one point Weitz suggests that Pol Pot's policies flowed logically from an ultra-radicalism, yet at other points he notes that he had to purge the Communist party frequently. More importantly, emptying the cities and abolishing money does not strike me as clever plans to destroy the ancien regime while following Democratic Kamuchea's own path to industrial modernity.
There are other problems. While genocide is understandably linked to war and crisis, this is not always the case. When destroying half of the population of what is now Congo, Belgium faced no imminent threat, nor did it carry out its crimes for any other reason than greed. Too much concentration on utopia and conflation of it with "fanaticism" leads to tautology. We condemn genocides as acts of fanaticism, and then define as fanatical genocidal acts. Weitz's discussion of the Yugoslav crisis does not really explain why so many Serbs and other Yugoslavs would support a policy that would definitely make the new nations considerably less than the sum of their parts. At one point Weitz mentions that Yugoslavia had a weaker civil society than, say, Poland or East Germany. But what distinguished pre-Milosevic Yugoslavia was not an especially brutal Communist regime. Indeed, the opposite was the case. Nor did Milosevic Serbia lack opposition parties and an independent church. There were no shortage of Serbs who denounced Milosevic, but a profound shortage of those who denounced Srebnica, and Weitz does not really explain why. At times Weitz's arguments are weak. He discusses popular complicity with genocidal crimes, though his main example for Nazi Germany actually takes place in Lithuania. He takes an example of one Serbian thug who comments that a victim looks like a cabbage and generalizes that this how all Serbian fighters viewed Bosnians. This is part of a larger problem with Weitz's discussion of ritual. Much of what he says about tortures and the rituals of atrocities is true, much of it is obvious, much of it is fashionable, but none of it is new or original. Likewise the accounts of genocide, while obviously horrific, do not really get us close to the minds of the perpetrators. Ultimately this is a book that adds little to our knowledge.

Holocausts
By John C. Landon
Interesting analytical comparative history of genocide in the twentieth century, in Russia, Germany, Cambodia, and Serbia. After invoking the case of Armenia the author shows the common core of these four in the light of the nineteenth century tide of race and nationalism. The emergence of race as a concept is demonized now, but the legacy of Darwinism tends to be underplayed, although the account makes clear the mood of Social Darwinist confusion leading up to the First World War and its coarsening of spirits (and Armenian overture) resulting in the walpurgisnacht to come. The concept of genocide was arguably miscast, since it applies too technically to racial issues. (Cf.The emergence of the term and the Genocide treaty, along with the life of its inventor Lemkin in A Problem from Hell. Also the case of Rwanda should be included, cf. A People Betrayed, by L. R. Melvern)

This book is poorly written, painfully repetitive, and excruciatingly poorly edited. The ideas are poorly organized, and at times it appears to be nothing more than a loose collection of quotations from other authors. The first chapter contains some interesting ideas, but its straight downhill from there. I should have known not to waste my time with this book when, in the prelude, the author states he will not address the Rwandan genocide because he doesn't know enough about it. Since the book attempts to cover the phenomenon of genocide in the 20th century from a comprehensive perspective, it seems somewhat dubious that the author submits not to understand one of the major genocides of the century. In short, this book is boring, obtuse and devoid of any useful purpose - I suggest taking a pass.

Book Description

Mastering Embedded Linux Programming takes you through the product cycle and gives you an in-depth description of the components and options that are available at each stage. You will begin by learning about toolchains, bootloaders, the Linux kernel, and how to configure a root filesystem to create a basic working device. You will then learn how to use the two most commonly used build systems, Buildroot and Yocto, to speed up and simplify the development process. Building on this solid base, the next section considers how to make best use of raw NAND/NOR flash memory and managed flash eMMC chips, including mechanisms for increasing the lifetime of the devices and to perform reliable in-field updates. Next, you need to consider what techniques are best suited to writing applications for your device. We will then see how functions are split between processes and the usage of POSIX threads, which have a big impact on the responsiveness and performance of the final device The closing sections look at the techniques available to developers for profiling and tracing applications and kernel code using perf and ftrace.

What you will learn
  • Understand the role of the Linux kernel and select an appropriate role for your application
  • Use Buildroot and Yocto to create embedded Linux systems quickly and efficiently
  • Create customized bootloaders using U-Boot
  • Employ perf and ftrace to identify performance bottlenecks
  • Understand device trees and make changes to accommodate new hardware on your device
  • Write applications that interact with Linux device drivers
  • Design and write multi-threaded applications using POSIX threads
  • Measure real-time latencies and tune the Linux kernel to minimize them

Coherent recipes for real world embedded Linux software construction
    By Jim Fathman
Considering how widely embedded Linux is used, we might expect more books on the subject. In fact, there are precious few, and it seems fewer are published now than ten years ago. Why is that? There is no shortage of books on other popular programming topics. It may be that writing competently about embedded Linux requires broader knowledge and greater skill.

This new book Mastering Embedded Linux Programming is a surprisingly good book. The author clearly has deep experience and it shows in the selection, organization, and presentation of embedded Linux topics which include building cross toolchains, U-Boot, the Linux kernel, and Buildroot to generate the root filesystem. You need a platform to run these things and the author wisely offers examples on Beaglebone Black for actual hardware and QEMU for software platform emulation.

I have experience with these technologies and platforms, but had to scrape up and adapt information as best I could at the time, so I can readily recognize coherent recipes that bring it all together. This book does that exceedingly well and should prove most useful to any experienced or aspiring embedded Linux developer.

I am not just reading the book. I am working through the examples, trying the build examples on an inexpensive $5/month cloud server. (Tip - If you have limited memory on the build server, such as 512 MB on a cloud server, configure 2 GB Linux swap space since that is needed by the Linux build tools.) I have found the examples to be entirely accurate so far, which is uncommon for embedded Linux guides and speaks well of the care taken by the author and technical reviewers.

This book is professionally written, accurate, and highly recommended.

With the popularity of embedded Debian Linux on Raspberry Pi, Beaglebone, and many other embedded Linux platforms, we could use an embedded Linux book with Debian concentration, particularly with regard to the intricacies of the Debian package build system and deployment to IoT devices. I would love to see this author take on such a project.

Master the art of programming your toaster the hardcore way
    By adnan baloch
The world of today is brimming with billions of devices (printers, webcams, home appliances etc.) running a form of the Linux OS called Embedded Linux. This particular flavor of Linux is customized for running in less than 16 megs of RAM and paltry amount of flash storage totalling a dozen megs or so. This might come as a rude surprise to anyone accustomed to gigs of RAM and terabytes of hard drive storage. Consequently, programming Embedded Linux requires throwing away old habits and learning how to make the most of available scarce resources. If you find yourself mulling a career in this challenging space, you just found the perfect book to take on your journey. The author starts from the basics and provides a concise overview of the norms in this field, from the CPU architectures to the major players manufacturing the chips. Though these architectures can be programmed for through using an emulator called QEMU, the author recommends getting the BeagleBone Black platform to get a hands-on experience to feel the real thing. Thankfully, this will be the only expense required since the software used throughout the book is open source. The author deals with the four facets of Embedded Linux: the toolchain (compilers, linkers etc.), the bootloader, the kernel and the root filesystem. Even though the reader will be trained on these aspects throughout the book, the author realises that doing this on a regular basis will be cumbersome for all but the most patient of people. Therefore, Buildroot and YoctoProject are explored showing how to automate the whole process. As long as low level systems programming in the C language is right up your alley, this book is your ticket to sailing all the way from development to debugging Embedded Linux solutions on any kind of supported hardware. The final chapter touches on real time programming, thus sweetening the pot even more.

Embedded Linux programming? You probably need this.
    By Richard J. Wagner
This book contains a lot of great information for 'embedded' programmers. From toolchain selection to real-time programming, the author takes the reader through a list of relevant topics and offers sound advice. It's clear the author has mastered the topic, he shares the knowledge freely.
A lot of the material is expert level, but there is plenty here for b-flat Linux programmers with an interest in embedded programming. Topics include kernel issues, threading and processes, use of GDB, and more.
If you want to program for embedded Linux devices, this book should have a spot on your bookshelf.

I don't know whether to be flattered or outraged but as I read these pages I felt gratitude. It's hard to find work so drenched in honesty and I was glad for the chance to read it. I liked hurting girls.
Mentally, not physically, I never hit a girl in my life. Well, once. But that was a mistake. I'll tell you about it later. The thing is, I got off on it. I really enjoyed it.
It's like when you hear serial killers say they feel no regret, no remorse for all the people they killed. I was like that. Loved it. I didn't care how long it took either, because I was in no hurry. I'd wait until they were totally in love with me. Till the big saucer eyes were looking at me. I loved the shock on their faces. Then the glaze as they tried to hide how much I was hurting them. And it was legal. I think I killed a few of them. Their souls, I mean. It was their souls I was after. I know I came close a couple of times. But don't worry, I got my comeuppance. That's why I'm telling you this. Justice was done. Balance has been restored. The same thing happened to me, only worse. Worse because it happened to me. I feel purged now, you see. Cleansed. I've been punished, so it's okay to talk about it all. At least that's how it seems to me. I carried the guilt of my crimes around with me for years after I stopped drinking. I couldn't even look at a girl, much less believe I deserved to converse with one. Or maybe I was just afraid that they'd see through me. Either way, after getting into Alcoholics Anonymous, I didn't even kiss a girl for five years. Seriously. Not so much as holding hands.
    I meant business.
I think I always knew deep down I had a drinking problem. I just never got around to admitting it. I drank purely for effect. But then, as far as I was concerned, wasn't everyone doing the same thing? I started to realize something was wrong when I began to get beaten up. My mouth always got me into trouble, of course. I'd go up to the biggest guy in the place and look up his nostrils and call him a faggot. And then when he'd head-butt me, I'd say, "Call that a headbutt?" So the guy would do it again harder. The second time I'd have less to say. One of my "victims" stuck my head on an electric cooker ring. In Limerick. Stab City. I was lucky to get out of that house alive. He'd done it, though, because I'd been taking the pith out of hiths listhp. Maybe that's why I moved on to girls. More sophisticated, doncha know. And girls wouldn't beat me up. They'd just stare at me in disbelief and shock.
    Their eyes, you see.
All the pretense and rules dissolved away. There was just the two of us and the pain. All those intimate moments, every little sigh, those gentle touches, the lovemaking, the confidences, the orgasms, the attempted orgasms-all mere fuel. The deeper in they were, the more beautiful they looked when the moment came.
And I lived for the moment. I was working freelance in advertising all through this period in London. As an art director. A contradiction in terms if ever there was one. It's what I still do today. Strangely, I was always able to get money. Even in art school, I got a grant because my dad had just retired and I suddenly became eligible. And after that I got job after job without too much trouble.
I never looked like a drunk, I just was one, and anyway in those days advertising was a far more boozy affair than it is today. Because I was freelance, I could be my own man, so to speak, and I would keep myself busy by ensuring I had dates lined up. None of the girls were supposed to know this. The idea was to have an impressive queue so that when one girl neared maturity-usually after about three or four dates with some phone calls in between-another would be introduced. Then as one went onto the scrap heap, a new one would take her place. Nothing unusual about my method, everyone did it. But I enjoyed it so much. Not the sex or even the conquest, but the causing of pain.
It was after my crazy night with Pen (more on that in a minute) that I realized I had found my niche in life. Somehow I was able to lure these creatures into my lair. Half the time I was trying to push them away, but it had just the opposite effect. And the fact that they were attracted to a piece of shit like me made me hate them even more than if they'd laughed in my face and walked away. As for looks? I'm nothing special, but I'm told I have beautiful eyes. Eyes from which nothing but truth could possibly seep.
They say the sea is actually black and that it merely reflects the blue sky above. So it was with me. I allowed you to admire yourself in my eyes. I provided a service. I listened
and listened and listened. You stored yourself in me.
Nothing had ever felt so right to me. If I'm honest, even today I miss hurting. I'm not cured of it, but I don't set out to systematically dismantle like I used to. I don't miss the booze half as much. Oh, to hurt again. Since those heady days I heard an adage that seems to apply here: "Hurt people hurt people."
I see now that I was in pain and wanted others to feel it, too. This was my way of communicating. I'd meet the women the first night and get the obligatory phone number and then after another couple of days, making them sweat a little, I'd call and be all nervous. They loved that. I'd ask them out and pretend I hardly ever did "this kind of thing" and say that I hadn't been out a lot in London because I didn't really know the scene. This was true, though, because all I used to do was get out of my head in local bars around Camberwell.
We'd agree to meet somewhere. I liked Greenwich, with the river and the boats and of course the pubs. And it had a great boyfriend/girlfriend feel. Nice and respectable. I'd be half out of it before we even met, but I'd be witty and charming and boyish and shaking. Trying to put me at ease, they'd smile and comment on my trembling, thinking I was nervous to create a good impression. Because I wasn't getting in enough booze, my very being would shudder. I'd have to order two large Jamesons at the counter for her every half lager. I'd down the Jimmys without her seeing and then on with the show.
    Lovely.
I didn't really care if I got them into bed or not. I just wanted some company while I got pissed, while I waited for the courage to hurt to well up in me. And they seemed pleased because I wasn't trying to grope them. Sometimes I would. But mostly I'd be fairly well behaved. This would go on for a few dates. In the meantime I would encourage them to tell me about themselves.
This is very important for the successful moment later. The more they confided and invested in you, the deeper the shock and the more satisfying the moment at the end. So, I'd be told of their dog's habits, their teddy bear's names, their father's moods, their mother's fears. Did I like kids? How many brothers and sisters did I have? A sitcom I had to sit through. But it was okay, because I knew I'd be writing her out of the series.
She'd talk and talk and talk, and I'd nod. Raise a strategic eyebrow. Grimace when necessary. Guffaw or feign shock, whatever was required. I'd watch people in conversation and record their facial expressions. Interest: Raise one eyebrow and raise or lower the other depending on the conversation.
Attraction: Try to blush. Not easy, this (thoughts of what I was going to do to her later helped). And a blush usually begot a blush. That is, if I could muster a blush, she was more than likely to blush back. Sympathy: Crinkle the forehead and nod gently. Charmed: Cock your head to one side and smile apologetically. I'd supply these prefab masks on cue. It was easy. It was enjoyable. Guys did it all the time to get laid. I did it to get even. Unkind to Womankind. That was my mission. Around this time I discovered the meaning of the word "misogynist." I remember thinking it hilarious that it had "Miss" as a prefix.
All I know is, I felt better when I saw someone else in pain. But of course they would often hide how much I had hurt them. Yes, it was a challenge in itself to help her externalize her feelings, but also bloody frustrating to have gone to all that trouble and then not be able to enjoy a dramatic playback. That's why it became necessary to condense everything into the one demonstrative moment.
Sophie was from South London. She used to do the wardrobe for Angus Brady on the comedy show Aren't You Glad to See Me? I met her at a Camberwell College of Arts party that I had crashed. After her, there was that designer girl-whose name I honestly can't remember-who I'm sure I hurt very deeply because she never called me back. Funny that, because even though I never met her again or even heard her say another word, I knew she had it bad.
    How do I know?
    I know.
There was Jenny. She was the one who threw the beer in my face. I was thrilled to have had a hand in causing so much rage.
Then came Emily. But she doesn't really count because she was as good if not better at whatever this is than I was. I kind of fell for her. Laura was somewhere in there. An ex- band publicist with a superb arse that had survived a young daughter. I woke up one morning and there was an eight-year-old girl watching as I tried to extricate myself from the freckled tentacles of her comatose mother. And then after she guilted me into walking her to school, I got the feeling that mother and daughter made full use of the men that passed through their lives. Like the Native American and the Buffalo, The Eskimo and the Seal, The Welfare Mother and Me.
And the one who started it all.
Penelope Arlington. I'd been going out with her for four and a half years. Long time. She'd been nice to me. Nicer to me than any other girl had ever been. When I spoke, she turned her head toward me and seemed to abandon herself to the meaning of my words. I liked that. It was only much later that I found out she was terrible in bed. At the time I thought she was wanton. She wasn't. But she's the one I regret hurting the most. Why? Because she didn't deserve it. Not that the others did, but she wouldn't have left me if I hadn't ripped her apart. And I needed her to leave me because she was getting in the way of my drinking.
And one night I just cracked up. It'd been bubbling for ages. Simmer, simmer, bubble, stew . . . gurgle. I got completely fizzingly drunk and this whole chain of events began to rattle. Why would anyone set out to break the heart of someone he loved? Why would anyone intentionally cause that kind of pain?
Why did people kill each other?
Because they enjoyed it. Was it really that simple? To achieve a soul-shattering, it is better if the perpetrator has been through the same experience. Hurt people hurt people more skillfully. An expert heartbreaker knows the effect of each incision. The blade slips in barely noticed, the pain and the apology delivered at the same time.

The Diary of an Oxygen Thief
    By Francisco Duran
Absolutely beautiful. No words can explain how beautiful and horrible it was at the same time. It took you into the mind of a broken heart looking for revenge, even while getting played at the same time. Recommended to anyone who's got time to just sit and read about love, hate, rage, and everyday problems:)
