Piri Thomas (1928 - 2011) was a writer and poet whose memoir "Down These Mean Streets" became a best-seller.The book describes his struggle for survival as a Puerto Rican/Cuban born and raised in the barrios of New York. It has been in print for 45 years. His other works include Savior, Savior Hold My Hand; Seven Long Times; and Stories from El Barrio. Thomas was involved with drugs, gang warfare and crime. While spending six years in prison, Thomas reflected on the teachings of his mother and father, and realized that a person is not born a criminal. Consequently he decided to use his street and prison know-how to reach at-risk youth, and to help them avoid a life of crime. Thomas was influential in the Nuyorican Movement which included poets Pedro Pietri, Miguel Algarin, and Giannina Braschi, who wrote of life in New York City using a mix of English and Spanish. Thomas traveled around the U.S., Central America and Europe, giving lectures and conducting workshops in colleges and universities. He was the subject of the film "Every Child is Born a Poet: The Life and Work of Piri Thomas" by Jonathan Robinson.

Literacy and the Mind

This book is quite a unique contribution to language, literacy, linguistics, and cognitive psychology as it addresses such themes. The Vai people (African: near Sierra Leone and Liberia) in this "Vai Project" were subjects in the testing of linguistic theory pertaining to literacy - and its development in society. The ethnography carried out was ethical and ecological.

The act if writing is quite unique to the human species - and unarguably literature is an act only carried out by human beings and as pointed out a recent act dating back to apx. 3500 BC. This book looks at Vai script in its encapsulated environment and how written text was used in this community through bush schools (boys and girls taken from their homes for 5 years of education).

One of the most interesting chapters for me was "Chapter 13: Studies of Memory" and the effects of Qur'anic learning. I am generally interested in memory so this is a very "specialist" dealing with memory pertaining to rote learning in literacy.

If you have a deep interest in literacy studies this is quite a unique book. If you are a linguistic anthropologist I assume you know of this book as it certainly must be a classic in the field (although I cannot confirm this). If you like to think of the ways of the mind and how text/written words shape our world this will also be an interesting academic read for you. I can recommend this book to engaged undergrads in such areas (anthropology, linguistics, linguistic anthropology, literacy studies) and certainly for graduate students in such fields.

This book explores the concept of the �communicative city�, developed initially by participants in an international Urban Communication Foundation initiative, by bringing together scholars from across the communication arts and sciences seeking to enhance our understanding of the dynamic relationship between urban residents and their social, physical, mediated, and built environments. The chapters are arranged in categories that speak to two larger themes: first, they all speak to at least one aspect of the qualifying and/or disqualifying characteristics of a communicative city. A second, larger theme is what we might refer to as a master trope of the urban experience and, indeed, of urban communication: inside/outside. The research presented here represents social scientific and humanistic approaches to communication, quantitative and qualitative methodologies, and positivist/normative and interpretive orientations, thereby providing a deeper understanding of the multi-level phenomena that unfold in urban communities.

About the Author
Matthew D. Matsaganis (PhD, University of Southern California) is Assistant Professor in the Communication Department at the State University of New York at Albany. He is co-author of Understanding Ethnic Media: Producers, Consumers & Societies (2011). His research has been published in numerous journals.
Victoria J. Gallagher (PhD, Northwestern University) is Professor of Communication and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina State University. Gallagher has published articles in many journals as well as in edited book collections.
Susan J. Drucker (JD, St. John’s University School of Law) is Professor in the Department of Journalism/Media Studies, School of Communication, Hofstra University. She is an attorney, and treasurer of the Urban Communication Foundation. She is the author and editor of 10 books, over 100 articles and book chapters, and co-editor of two previous volumes of the Urban Communication Reader.
