About the Author

Carol Murphy Clyne and Vincent Clyne launched PAIRINGS palate + plate in Cranford, N.J. in 2010. Their restaurant concept is based on constantly evolving seasonal recipes featured in the globally inspired, contemporary American dinner menu; the on-site buffet menu; and their cooking classes. The couple also owned a personal catering company for 20 years. Carol holds ProChef Level II Certification from The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, and Vincent, a Certified Wine Professional credential from the CIA in Napa Valley. Vincent was also awarded the Signorello Vineyards Food Writing Scholarship to the Symposium for Professional Food Writers at The Greenbrier in West Virginia. Carol is currently a visiting instructor for the food enthusiasts programs at the CIA.

Love this cookbook!

As a "Home Cook" who loves to host family and friends, I found Modern Buffet Presentation to be chock full of tips on menu planning and how to maximize the flow by carefully planning your buffet station(s). There is also a wonderful assortment of recipes with clear directions and fantastic tips on advance preparation. This is a book I know I will use over and over!

Good book for new caterers.

Not a bad book for a fresh young culinary student learning the ropes. I have been catering for 20 years now and am always looking for new ideas and thoughts in our field. After culinary school I worked in many kitchens honing my craft to one day break out as a new chef and take the world by storm. Along the way I began catering events for friends, family, church, and soon my phone began to ring from people I never met. I never looked back and my career as a personal/catering chef was in full swing. This book would have helped me build my business many years ago, but now it is more like a look at my travels (been there, done that). For anyone just starting out I think this is a great buy, and a solid foundation to build off. I am keeping it since I am now a culinary instructor at a school and use it for one of my classes.

In the current rapidly changing health care environment, the role of medical technology/clinical laboratory science personnel is expanding. An increased awareness of the business aspects of health care is expected. Therefore, the entry level laboratory practitioner must be cognizant of the financial, personnel, operational, and marketing issues affecting the laboratory in order to successfully perform and compete in this continuously changing environment.

Principles of Clinical Laboratory Management: A Study Guide and Workbook was designed to allow the learner to develop basic management competencies through a variety of learning experiences. The book can be used in a classroom situation or as a self-tutorial instructional manual. Each chapter is divided as follows:

• Objectives: competencies that should be attained upon completion of each chapter. The objectives are leveled (1,11, and III) as a guide to the learner regarding the depth of comprehension that should be attained. Level I indicates an ability to recall the material, Level 11 indicates the ability to apply the material, and Level III indicates the ability to solve problems in new situations.
• Topic Summary: a brief introductory narrative regarding the topic. Selected terms and phrases are in bold-faced type to emphasize a concept. Subheadings are used as appropriate based on the chapter topic. The learner may gain more information regarding the topic by reviewing the bibliography and internet sources as well as other management materials.
• Bibliography: suggested readings to enhance knowledge regarding the topic.
• Internet Resources: resources available on the Web. Although the authors have found these sites to be helpful, the authors do not endorse any site.
• Questions: a method for the learner to engage in reviewing the narrative information. The questions specifically address the cognitive skills. Each question is coded to the corresponding objective and level for easy reference.

Well It's alright, but not quite what I was looking for. This would actually (despite the misleading title) be a great intro for under-graduates for those areas that my uni didn't teach.
Things like ethics, problem solving, proffesionalism, and writing resume's, all the way up to epidemiology, quality control and proffessional writing are covered, albeit briefly (the average chapter is two to three pages long). This book, as I said previously, would be a good primer for new graduates in what to expect from a workplace other than all the technical why's and where-for's that have been jammed into their heads by theoretical lecturers.
Unfortunately not a good resource for someone looking to improve their knowledge base when going for a promotion, and definitely not for those of you freshly promoted and foundering in a sea of paperwork and qc.

The seller is excellent--product was in great condition and arrived quickly. The book itself is less than desirable. The book is badly written, and the answers to the questions at the end of each chapter can hardly be answered using the information within the chapters.

Bought this book for an online class

I bought this book for an online class and I am not sure I like it too much. It is a good book with short chapters, but a lot of the things that my instructor expects out of us isn't really in the book. It doesn't offer great definitions and I feel like it leaves a lot to be desired. As soon as I am done with this class I will be selling it back. I am not adding this to my collection of textbooks.

Must have for experienced Grails developers

I watched the development of this book on Safari Books Online and have just received my printed copy. I've been doing Grails development now for about 2+ years and have have deployed a number of projects into production. This book is a must-have for experienced Grails developers. There is a gem on virtually every page. There is a lot of "best practices" advice given. The chapter on plugin development is an eye opener. The chapter on Spring is in the same category. Thanks Burt!

This is an Excellent Grails 2.0 Book

Virtually everyone in the Grails world knows Burt Beckwith, and there's a reason for that: this guy knows Grails inside and out. This book is just further evidence of Burt's deep understanding of Grails and how it works.

I'm not sure a brand-new Grails developer would be able to absorb everything offered up here. If you already have Java experience and have a decent understanding of Hibernate and Spring, you'll probably be fine. Grails does a wonderful job of hiding the complexity of these underlying Java libraries, but Programming Grails does pull back the curtains a bit. And this is not a bad thing, it's actually long overdue in my opinion.

There are plenty of "introductory" Grails books out there already. I didn't need another one of those, one that basically says "type this command and watch the magic!" Burt actually explains what is going on; what Grails is doing and why it is doing it. One look at the table of contents (oddly not available here on Amazon but it can be seen at http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920024750.do) will show you immediately that this is not your average Grails book.

Not only is the power of Grails explained, but its (admittedly rare) limitations are also covered, along with options and workarounds. Numerous tips that only an experienced Grails developer will know are also included. Even the ancillary information is great. For example, during the thorough discussion of Grails security options, Burt provides great advice that applies to anyone building web applications. If every web developer in the world only read this little part of the book, it would probably save billions of dollars in security-related losses.

To sum up, if you have some Grails experience or are familiar with Java and industry-standard libraries like Hibernate and Spring, this book is an excellent resource. Brand new developers who want to learn Grails will probably also find it very useful, but it may take them some extra time to absorb the information because it is not a "watered down" beginners guide. Great job, Burt.

a guided tour of the "magic" parts by a seasoned expert

If you've been programming in Grails for a year (give or take) and are ready to go deeper than the tutorials and docs usually take you, then this book is just what the doctor ordered. If asked to sum it up as a pithy one-liner, I'd describe it as a guided tour of the framework's guts by one of the field's seasoned experts. He goes beyond the basics, and dives headlong into those dark corners for (as he puts it) "developers who want to dig deeper into the architecture and understand more about how Grails works its magic".

Having worked in, with, around, over, under, and through Grails over the past couple of years, this book was exactly what I was looking for at this point in my relationship with the framework. Beckwith is specifically targeting developers that have gone past simply snapping together applications along the happy-path; this one is for the developers that find themselves regularly battling with some dark and thorny corner or rough edge of the framework. Beckwith does a fantastic job of introducing these "hidden" and "magical" parts of Grails, and breaking them down into easily-digestible sections. It's like a series of miniature epiphanies -- one right after the other. (The opening chapter on Groovy alone is worth the price of admission.)

There were a couple of things that could have made this one better. Most of them were small to the point of being ridiculous (e.g., I could have used a more specific definition for the _purpose_ behind `BootStrap.groovy`), while others were arguably out of scope (e.g., an in-depth discussion of Groovy's metaclasses is... probably more appropriate for a book dedicated to Groovy). Then there was the chapter on plugin development which -- although I learned something on almost every page -- I found myself wondering: (1) why not discuss how to run with inline plugins right from start? (2) why wait so long to mention `settings.groovy`? (3) why not a better example of CLI tests?

(As you can see: even my "legitimate gripes" are little more than nit-picks. But I suppose the nit-picks add up?)

Would I recommend this one? In heartbeat. I'll continue to recommend Grails in Action as the best place to start (with the caveat: "as soon as the second edition comes out..."), but "Programming Grails" is required reading for anyone with six months or more of non-trivial Grails development under their belt.

I'm in the process of working towards my ITIL expert certificate and these books are a great reference. I wish that the hard copies came with free access to the electronic copies but oh well, can't have everything.

High Quality Publishing and Content

This is the source for all of the ITIL Framework. The topics are covered in detail. Since each volume is specific to a particular Lifecycle of the Framework (Service Stategy, Service Design, Service Transistion, Service Operations, Continous Service Improvement), A topic may appear in more than one volume, but only as related to that Lifecycle phase. This is great since the material is not just repeated, but restated in proper context. Overall, this set is a must if you are serious about ITIL implementation. In addition to the text, each volume provides some sample suggested forms associated to the particular Lifecycle - a huge plus if you are new to ITIL.

About the Author
Howard “Stretch” Eugene Johnson (1915–2000) was a former Communist Party leader, Cotton Club dancer, World War II veteran, and academic. His final years were spent as a professor of Black studies at SUNY New Paltz and as an ongoing activist in Hawai'i, where he helped achieve state recognition of Martin Luther King’s birthday as a bank holiday, marching until the age of 80 in Paris, France, and Harlem for causes he believed just.

Wendy Johnson is the eldest of Stretch and Martha Sherman Johnson’s three daughters. She has worked as an activist, translator, and teacher of English. She lives in Paris.

Mark D. Naison is Professor of History and African American Studies at Fordham University, where he also directs the Bronx African American History Project. He is the author of three books, including Communists in Harlem During the Depression.

History is a curious thing, full of drama, intrigue, plot twists and misadventures. Howard “Stretch” Johnson’s posthumously published memoir is similarly curious.
A Dancer in the Revolution: Stretch Johnson, Harlem Communist at the Cotton Club is a quick-paced, fascinating glimpse into the life a one-time Communist Party USA leader. Part anecdotal, part history - though all entertaining - I breezed through A Dancer over a weekend.
I especially enjoyed the matter-of-fact tone of Johnson’s story. His narrative jumps from Depression-era dancer to international communist, from youthful drugs and debauchery to isolation, loneliness and alcoholism during the McCarthy era, when he and other communists went underground, separated from his wife and family.
While working in the mob-run, world-famous jazz scene that was the 1930s Cotton Club, “Stretch” Johnson received “a postgraduate course in the complexities of class relationships in America.” According to him, the Cotton Club was “the laboratory”: The “arrogance of the mob toward society in general was exponentially multiplied when it was mixed with white racist attitudes.”
It was Johnson’s first-hand experiences with racism, as an entertainer, that would shape his political outlook and lead him to eventually join the Communist Party USA. “It was a perfectly logical step in my development,” he wrote, “to join the American Communist Party. Being Black and beginning to look for some solution to the problem of survival, there seemed to be nothing else to do. American society had excluded us.”
It was through the Harlem Young Communist League and American Youth Congress - a party-led, broad-based youth organization - that Johnson gained valuable early experience as an organizer and learned that “Blacks, generally, were not as easily hoodwinked about the advantages of capitalism.” The “disadvantages and penalties the system imposed” through “institutionalized processes and norms that maintain the racist infrastructure,” served to weaken African American loyalty to an economy and ideology that had had quite literally sold them down the river.
In 1941, Johnson attended the Southern Negro Youth Congress convention. SNYC, “a model communist-led youth organization,” challenged racism and Jim Crow head-on in the South. According to Johnson, “The cadre brought forward [by the SNYC and its communist leadership] in the South became the shock troops of the later developing civil rights movement.” James Jackson, Esther Cooper-Jackson, “Stretch” Johnson and many other young communists undoubtedly laid the groundwork and paved the way for the tremendous changes soon to come. They are only now beginning to be recognized for their outstanding, selfless commitment and leadership.
By 1946 Johnson had returned home from war, having spent part of that time with communist partisans in Italy. Now a veteran, he helped to found and organize the communist-led United Negro and Allied Veterans of America (UNAVA), an organizational illustration of “our practical activity,” which “develop[ed] a nationwide campaign on the terminal leave pay issue.” By some estimates, upwards of $300 million - a staggering sum, especially during this time - “was being denied veterans in the South through the control of the distribution of application forms by the [racist] plantation owners.”
Additionally, when African American veterans did receive their terminal leave pay, “white plantation bosses would charge from 50 percent to 75 percent of the value of the checks to cash it.” Terminal leave pay was usually around $300, or about one year’s pay. Undoubtedly, racist plantation owners did not like the idea of a “labor shortage” or of financially independent African Americans.
Eventually, Johnson and the rest of the UNAVA leadership secured an agreement with the War Department “to distribute the terminal leave pay application forms nationally,” which they did with “big fanfare and send-off from our New York headquarters,” where “1 million terminal leave pay blanks had been delivered quite dramatically.” Johnson estimates that “close to $30 million reached the veterans, a sum they would not have obtained without our efforts.”
Johnson’s telling of the UNAVA campaign (an amazing piece of history!), as well as his other adventures, has energy, direction, and propulsive drive. His stories whet the appetite and provide just enough of a hint to lead the curious, like myself, down the rabbit hole, searching for ever more clues to this intriguing phenomenon called history. Johnson is at his best when recounting these stories.
After Khrushchev’s 1956 revelations of Stalin’s crimes, Johnson “quietly” left the Party, “discontinuing my eighteen-year association” without red-baiting or repudiating “my whole past activism in the labor and civil rights struggles.”
While no longer a party member, Johnson continued as an academic and activist until his passing on May 25, 2000.
A Dancer in the Revolution: Stretch Johnson, Harlem Communist at the Cotton Club is honest, maybe sometimes too honest. The events described in Johnson’s memoir paint a flawed, often contradictory, always humanizing picture. “Stretch” Johnson was a dancer and a communist, but he was also so much more. His memoir is well worth the read.
