Waste of money

Utter Rubbish. - this was my first review and I was pulled up rather harshly for not giving any reasons behind it ... so herewith my reasoning.
In the very first paragraph of the book Melanie states: "Simply follow the instructions and by the time you are finished, you will have written your book."
You will not have done any such thing. You will have pages and pages and pages of questions about your characters' ages and the setting for your book and (if you stuck with this methodology) pages and pages of answers to them.
Melanie Anne Phillips is one of the developers of Dramatica - screenwriting software that is pretty well known and quite highly regarded. It was for this reason that I actually bought this book. Dramatica gives very precise details on ways to develop a screen story, therefore I assumed that this book would be as good for novels.
Perhaps if you are a complete novice at writing you will appreciate the very long-winded, very detailed chapter giving Melanie's reasons for selecting one age over another to award to her characters - but I was hoping for a little more meat.
And I guess that sums up my problem with this book - it is very long to say very little. You are better off going to the Dramatica website and just reading the articles they have there.
Or buy a different book.

We have read this several times over!

Do your children know that Christmas was a rescue mission so that people could be friends with God? Through this Advent storybook, you can introduce your little ones to the loving God, the Savior of mankind, and the meaning of His birth. 25 engaging 1-minute stories, spanning the entire Bible, will make sharing the true meaning of Christmas with your little ones a simple and fun task, for even the most fidgety of kids.

With 5 kids 6 and under, I’m all about quick and engaging, but often the message is lost in brevity. Natasha and Brianna do a fantastic job of keeping the truths simple and the pictures colorful, with so much to look at and hear, my kids were fascinated with each page and wanted to read the whole book in one sitting {we may have done just that quite a few times}. There’s even a fun little bug for kids to search for on each page!

If you’re looking for a beautifully illustrated book, that speaks of God’s love and truth to little ones, that won’t devolve into a session of telling kids to “sit still” and “pay attention”…this is the book for you!

A bigger look at the Christmas story - great for all ages!

I absolutely love this book. She was dead on when she said this was written for busy moms! Each day's story is just the right length to reflect the substance and richness of each part of the entire story of God sending Jesus for us but also short enough to hold my 3 year old's attention. I can't wait until she is older and we can expand each story by using the "learn more" section at the end of the book. I'm grateful Natasha took the time and care to put together a book that is beautiful, well written, and understandable by children and adults. I enjoy reading it as well and read it on my own first before reading it with my children, something I don't often do with things aimed at kids. It was a breath of fresh air into a story that I've seemingly heard hundreds of times...yet I loved having a fresh perspective and a bigger look at the entire story as God intended us to see Christmas as. Thanks for a great Christmas book!!!

Finding the little bugs was such a fun addition to each day's reading

This book exceeded my already high expectations. The simple stories speak to my own heart and interest my two year old at the same time! THe art is gorgeous and the words so filled with hope and joy--and the journey through the redemption story is exactly what I want to make the focus of our holidays. Finding the little bugs was such a fun addition to each day's reading. This book was definitely a winner in our house and one I am excited to share with family and friends.

Great Book for Part-Time Programmers

Firstly, this book covers Fortran 90 and 95 in great detail, offering many helpful suggestions to those who are used to older versions of Fortran, such as Fortran 77, and highlighting the differences between the 90 and 95 versions. Where this book shines is in the hundreds of examples of and bits of advice on good programming practice spread throughout the book. It's specifically tailored to those "part-time" programmers, scientists and engineers who do not come from a computer science or software engineering background. Most current (and new) Fortran programmers would benefit greatly by learning the programming style found here. I can't agree with all the advice, however, such as abandoning the basic "real" and "double precision" data types in favor of the new "kind" parameterized types. Still, the philosophy behind such advice is sound, and good programmers will know when and when not to use specific language features. One subject unfortunately missing from the book is programming for parallel processors, and other techniques to speed programs up. But most Fortran programmers don't need to worry about this subject and those who do can get O'Reilly's "High Performance Computing" and Jon Bentley's "Writing Efficient Programs". The examples and quizzes within, and the exercises at the end of, each chapter make this a great textbook. The appendices and index make it useful as a reference book. If you program in Fortran 90 or 95, I'd say this book is a must-have.

A beginner's review...

I am new to programming. I somehow missed picking up any language as an undergraduate and by the time I became a graduate student in physics I knew I needed to pick one up fast. I've tried many books but I just can't get through them. I usually don't make it past the 2nd chapter. There are many reasons for this but mostly the authors do not have enough examples and they tend to go off on tangents that detract from the lesson at hand. Recently I began a research project that used a ton of Fortran 90 legacy code and so I decided that I needed to try again. I got this book about a week ago and I am finishing chapter 5 at the moment. This book is great for learning how to program. It cuts right to the meat and gives well explained examples and quizzes throughout the book. I worked the examples and quizzes and a few problems from the end of the chapter after reading through it. If you are looking for a reference this probably isn't it. If, however, you are a beginner like me looking to learn how to program in Fortran 90/95 this is your book.

Great to learn Fortran

I have been using this text to learn Fortran 90/95. I have used Matlab significantly and understand very minimal C++. I find this book very useful and informative. It outlines programing pitfalls and tips for good programming practices. The examples are very easy to follow and the index is very usable. I would say this is a good book if you are just learning Fortran. Another thing I like about it is the fact that it has a chapter discussing older Fortran practices and the new/ modified commands. I have been using that section a lot to update an old Fortran 77 program I have. Overall it was well worth the $60 or so that I paid. There may be other references that are available online for free, but I like that I can highlight and write in a text, so I prefer printed material to online material.
