I loved the second book of the series

I loved the second book of the series! It was gripping and very fascinating. It was like riding on a thrilling roller coaster. The only problem was the ending. It ended abruptly leaving me hanging with a thousand questions. Is there a third book? Because there truly should be one. This series is too good for such a disjointed ending. Otherwise it was great!!!!

I usually don't write book reviews, but this book made me. Usually when you have a book series, the second book is worse then the first one. However, in this situation this book was the most thrilling story. Gordon Korman planned this series out perfectly because this book didn't kill me from boredom. I cant wait for the third book to come out. If you like books with an action adventure effect, read the masterminds series!

Inspiring

When I read this book the first time, it was so inspiring, I signed up for my first Ironman, which was a life-changing experience. I recommended it to a friend and my sister, and they both started doing long distance triathlons after thinking me initially crazy. Now, after reading it the second time, I'm inspired all over again, as I embark on my second Ironman. Even if you aren't a world champion, the sport of triathlon changes you and shows you you're made of much more than you ever thought you were, and this brings further inspiration to yourself and others. Great book!!

A moving account

A Life Without Limits: A World Champion's Journey is am amazing book for any endurance athlete to read, especially amateurs. While it will not win any literary awards, it is truly inspirational and moving. The author presents a remarkable journey starting from not having any athletic aspirations to becoming a world champion. There is a great balance of detailing her strengths and weaknesses. If she had only talked about her strong motivation to succeed, and all her her work to overcome all the obstacles, then it would have come across an arrogant treatise. She demonstrates a level of humility that is rare among most champions, where she gives credit to people and circumstances beyond her control. She also show great self-awareness of her weaknesses, which makes the story much more touching. My favorite chapter was the second last one, where she details the heroes of the sport, who are not the famous champions, but ordinary people participating in Ironman, driven by the sheer desire to make a difference to the world. My favorite theme from the book, is the authors embrace of life, driven by her desire to make a difference in the world, and letting it lead, where it does.

Inspirational! Mandatory Reading for Aspiring Endurance Athletes

I have learned in a \short period of time that triathletes are a very strange breed of athlete. While largely toiling in anonymity, the triathlete mercilessly works her/his body to the absolute limits of human endurance. They are acutely (and sometimes grossly) intimate with every biological function and become soul-mates with pain and drudgery. It is the constant testing of their limits that leads to the belief in limitlessness (or as was said in The Matrix, "there is no spoon"). In "A LIfe Without Limits", this boundless energy and spirit is explained with beautiful clarity by the sport's leading lady over the past decade - Chrissie Wellington.

As much a story about pursuing dreams and the sacrifices necessary to make them happen, as it is a story about athletic achievement, Chrissie takes us on a guided tour of a life lived in direct opposition to cubicles, committee meetings and the silent desperation of a well-meaning advocate for the developing world. Despite all of the earmarks of an effective bureaucrat working to improve the lives of developing populations throughout the world, Chrissie took up triathlon at a relatively late age and became dominant within the sport's Ironman idiom within a brief period of time. The agony of her transition into formal training - as much mentally and emotionally taxing as physically - virtually bleeds through the pages. We are left with a clear vision of what it takes to be a champion triathlete which, for aspiring endurance athletes, raises as many questions as it answers. Of course, Chrissie is no ordinary triathlete (oxymoron aside)... she is undefeated in her Ironman distance races. The mere fact of her triumphs would be remarkable: That she has overcome a long shopping list of injury and ailments that would cause mere mortals to hang up their aeros long ago makes for compelling narrative. For the athlete, Chrissie's tale is both cautionary and boundlessly inspiring. However, the inspiration extends to all endeavors and poses a challenge to everyone to simply reject their largely self-imposed constraints and to seek out excellence. In short, this is a great read for anyone seeking a well-constructed pep talk. Yes... add "excellent writer" to Chrissie's bold CV.

Sadly, the book serves as a coda for Chrissie's remarkable career - having announced her retirement from Ironman competition earlier this year. Armed with the heightened profile of a legendary athlete, Chrissie seems poised to "coin" her celebrity for the benefit of the developing world (as she has done throughout her spectacular career). Silently, however, I hope that this book is rendered somewhat obsolete with her return to Ironman someday. Such decisions lie solelywith the great lady herself. As it is, the book focuses attention not only on the sport of triathlon, but leaves one curious about the leading exponents of the women's game such as Leanda Cave and up-and-coming wunderkind Angela Naeth. On this level, the book serves the sport and its fan base exceptionally well.

Endurance athletes may grumble that many of the technical details are lacking. Even I was left to wonder just what went into the transition from competitive local swimmer to undefeated Ironman triathlete over so short a period of time. Were this book intended exclusively for triathletes, that might be a legitimate complaint. Those "missing" details would likely result in a 1000 page monster that none but the most fanatical practitioners would find comprehensible, much less enjoyable. Such matters are best left to coaching, should Ms. Wellington elect to do so. For the purposes of personal narrative literature, this book is infinitely enjoyable and left me anxious to get to my next training run.

"Recent trends in probability and statistics reference works and textbooks include placing a greater emphasis on authentic problems and data. To this end, Schoenberg (UCLA) avoids the traditional "balls in an urn" approach to probability, and interestingly ties basic probability theory to Texas holdem poker. The content is challenging but thorough, and the reader needs to think through the poker realities as well as the related probability theory. Introductory chapters stress basic principles of counting, permutations, combinations, and conditional probabilities, but inevitably tie back to Texas hold’em hands. Many of the examples are based on actual tournament results, making the resulting discussions even more authentic. Given the discrete nature of poker hands, it was interesting to see the author tackle continuous data by investigating wait times between eliminations, again maintaining the Texas hold’em theme. More advanced topics show bluffing tied to the Poisson distribution and late player arrival to exponential random variables. Ultimately, the book provides heavily theoretic coverage and calculus-based support of various distributions, but the link to poker is never abandoned. About the Author

Frederic Paik Schoenberg is a professor and graduate vice-chair of statistics at UCLA. He is also co-editor of the Journal of Environmental Statistics. He earned a Ph.D. in statistics from UC Berkeley. His research interests include point processes, image analysis, time series, and applications in seismology and fire ecology.

Interesting examples and nice explainations.

A good book illustrate basic probability theory using Poker examples. I am not a poker player but find it interesting learning probability with poker examples~ Better than those abstract examples.
Some mistakes do happen in editing. Hope a newer version with these errors corrected will be come out soon.

Extremely limited use for Kindle Edition - PC or Mac Only

The contents of this book are great but why the hell is it only available for Kindle for Mac or PC and NOT cloud kindle, regular kindle? I mean, for the price, it should be much more widely available. I'm really unhappy with this situation and I hope the author and publisher agree to open this up for the other devices.

**Update** I've read through a good portion of the book now and done the exercises. It's a fantastic book. I'm limited in how I can view it so I don't plan on giving it more stars until that is addressed. The book starts off with the three axioms of probability and some great examples. From there the book references back to those axioms to show how further concepts in probability are built from them. Sticking with the game of Texas Hold'em is a great tactic because the reader becomes intimately familiar with the game and isn't trying to switch gears into other domains for every example. I have found this to be extremely useful in building up the knowledge meant to be imparted by the book.

I would say this book is worth 4 to 4.5 stars on content alone. The restricted format, though, has made it shockingly limited in what apps and devices can display it. For the price, the content is perfect. I just wish I didn't have to revive an old 15" laptop with an old version of Windows just to read it given I have Linux, Windows 8 and a 3rd generation Kindle...

a lovely book which is very helpful

It was in 2003 when my wife and I got married, and Maldives was chosen as our honeymoon destination. There were not so much information about the resorts back then so we've had a hard time making the decision. Luckily we did a great choice and had a couple of wonderful weeks there. At the end of that trip when we spend our final hours there at Male (the capital), we found this book (the 1st edition) at a local souvenir shop and bought it right away. The ratings about the relative price and room density, and the icons in the "information box" of this book give you a quick understanding of each resort and you may find it quite easy to narrow down your choices from more than one hundred to only a few according to your own interests. Beautiful pictures and well arranged texts give you a very comfortable and relaxed feeling when you read it, just like what the Maldives does. I’ve purchased the following editions of the book as a collection because Adrian Neville keeps visiting the resorts and making updates. (There are a lot more new resorts opening since then by the way.) And now this kindle edition makes it even more convenient to use as a guide book. We returned to the Maldives several times after our honeymoon and each time we did, we took this book from the bookshelf. Reading this book always reminds me of the beautiful memories there. It’s really a great book to have if you plan to go or already have been there.

Enormously useful!

Picking a resort in the Maldives can be incredibly difficult - there are so many options that it becomes almost impossible to absorb all the information. Planning a holiday to the Maldives with Adrian Neville's knowledge of the islands and the unbiased and pertinent information contained in this book makes it all much less stressful. A must-have - and if we don't have a trip planned, the book makes for wonderful browsing and dreaming!

How Renaissance painters used color to unify their pictures, exploit symbolism and achieve emotional expressiveness is the theme of this handsomely illustrated monograph, which focuses on 20 paintings. Hall, an associate professor of art history at Temple University, highlights Leonardo's naturalistic use of shadowy midtones in the Mona Lisa , the way Michelangelo's fleshy hues dynamically link the figures in the Sistine Chapel vault, Titian's predilection for bright, saturated colors to create movement and Piero della Francesca's innovative experiments with oils. Hall makes us realize that, given the Renaissance's limited palette, the harmonious, radiant compositions achieved were marvels indeed. For the Mannerists, she shows, color was just as important as distortions of form in disrupting classical style. This sophisticated study combines traditional analysis with a consideration of recent scientific findings from conservation laboratories.

With the exception of Venetian colorism, the obviously central role of color in Renaissance painting has been relatively neglected. In this pioneering synthesis, Hall brilliantly conjoins an understanding of the technique and materials employed from the 14th through the 16th centuries with vivid evocations of the role of color within a complex of compositional, expressive, and iconographic requirements. The integral consideration of color as a critical aspect of composition and meaning serves to illuminate and enrich the perception and comprehension of works that are among the major achievements of European painting. Particularly stimulating and valuable are the discussions of works by the greatest High Renaissance masters in terms of self-selected color styles and modal theory. A must reader for any painter with any interest in painting.

A wonderful read, thorough, focused and all about looking. One of only a few books that truly approaches the idea of painting and its history on its own terms. Mrs Hall beautifully discusses ideas of process as being inextricably bound to the idea of particular meaning. Beginning with painting's early interest in the description of likness and the evocation of literal space, she traces a remarkably plausible chronological development wherein all of what are now the standard conventions of painting are discovered. Mrs Hall has written a book that seems custom built for painters; it is wonderful.

About the Author
Walter E. Oliu served as chief of the Publishing Services Branch at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, where he managed the agency’s printing, graphics, editing, and publishing programs. He also developed the public-access standards for and managed daily operations of the agency’s public Web site.� He has taught at Miami University of Ohio, Slippery Rock State University, and as an adjunct faculty member at Montgomery College and George Mason University.� His books include Writing That Works,� Tenth Edition� (reprinted chapters appear in Kevin J. Harty’s Strategies for Business and Technical Writing, Fifth Edition, , and Brenda D. Smith and Laura C. Headley’s The Lifelong Reader, Second Edition); The Handbook of Technical Writing, Ninth Edition; The Business Writer’s Handbook, Ninth eEdition (Fortune and Book-of-the-Month Club selections); The Business Writer’s Companion, Sixth Edition; The Technical Writer’s Companion, Third Edition; Writing from A-Z, Fifth Edition; and The Professional Writer.�Charles T. Brusaw was a faculty member at NCR Corporation's Management College, where he developed and taught courses in professional writing, editing, and presentation skills for the corporation worldwide. A thorough bus comm textbook

I have used Writing That Works as a required text in an undergraduate business communication course for three years. The book is thorough and well organized with a collection of useful exercises at the end of each chapter. Chapters 1-6 address the writing process, starting with the fundamentals of writing and moving forward to include gathering research and organizing information. Chapters 7 and 8 provide much needed information on visual communication and document design. Chapters 8 and 9 provide an introduction to business communication, and the remainder of the book provides an in-depth look at several specific types of documents including proposals, reports, and instructions.

Excellent resource

I've seen a number of items in the same subject area, as I teach undergrad business writing courses. This one provides the best examples, including some for non-traditional students who didn't do college right away or even in just four years. Consistently, students in my classes say this is the one book they're keeping.

A must buy if you're involved in professional writing. This has topics on social media and online communications which is a great help as well. I was going to rent it until i foudn out how useful this would be, so i purchased it. i recommend it to anyone looking to improve or brush up skills
